The number of vacancies in February to April 2023 was 1,083,000, a decrease of 55,000 from November 2022 to January 2023.   Vacancy numbers fell on the quarter for the 10th consecutive period in February to April 2023, down by 4.9% since November 2022 to January 2023, with vacancies falling in 14 of the 18 industry sectors.

Organisations using licence-exempt energy to benefit from up to thousands of pounds in support.   Hundreds more organisations, from recycling plants to large data centres, to receive money off their energy bills businesses using licence-exempt energy offered support through new government scheme opening today backdated support also extended to off-grid organisations using licence-exempt energy to match support others received this winter Steelmakers, recycling plants and manufacturers are among the hundreds of businesses that will benefit from a new scheme launched by the government today to help with the cost of their energy bills.

Scottish Government Investing In Scotland's Islands
Projects designed to stimulate economic activity, boost tourism and improve community assets on Scotland's islands will share £4.1 million in the latest round of funding from the Islands Programme.   A total of 13 initiatives will benefit from the funding include the a community recycling hub on Shetland, the construction of new accommodation for workers in Mull and the development of a new bike park on the Isle of Arran.

Growth in employees' average total pay (including bonuses) was 5.8% and growth in regular pay (excluding bonuses) was 6.7% in January to March 2023.   Total pay growth continues to be smaller than regular pay growth because of bonuses; the bonus payments made in March 2023 are at similar levels to March 2022, with the exception of the construction sector and wholesaling, retailing, hotels and restaurants sector that saw a slight decrease.

Retailers Waiting For Summer
UK Total retail sales increased by 5.1% in April, against a decline of 0.3% in April 2022.  This is in line with the 3-month average growth of 5.1% and above the 12-month average growth of 3.0%.

Early estimates for April 2023 indicate that the number of payrolled employees rose by 1.0% compared with April 2022, a rise of 297,000 employees; the number of payrolled employees was up by 2.9% since February 2020, a rise of 838,000.   Payrolled employment decreased by 136,000 employees (0.5%) in April 2023 when compared with March 2023; this is the first fall in total payrolled employees since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, though this should be treated as a provisional estimate and is likely to be revised when more data are received next month.
