Economic Recovery Should Be National Endeavour
The First Minister will pledge the Scottish Government's support to work in partnership with industry for a more resilient economy following the pandemic, to help create a wealthier, fairer and greener Scotland.   In the opening address at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) Annual Forum in Edinburgh, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to urge businesses to adapt to new ways of working that will help achieve net zero and improve overall wellbeing.

Minimum unit pricing (MUP) sets a floor price on a unit of alcohol to prevent the sale of ‘cheap' drinks, with the aim of reducing alcoholrelated harm.  MUP was introduced in Scotland on 1 May 2018 at 50p per unit.

New legislation to allow a wider range of healthcare professionals to certify fit notes has been introduced by the UK government to ease pressure on GPs.  This legislation change applies across England, Scotland and Wales.   Nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists to certify and issue fit notes - reducing pressure on doctors, particularly GPs.

Defence Secretary Travels To Ukraine To Meet President Zelenskyy
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace travelled to Kyiv to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov to discuss Ukraine's efforts to fight off Russia's brutal and unjustified invasion.   The working visit took place this week to allow the Defence Secretary to hear first-hand how the operational needs of Ukraine's Armed Forces are developing as the nature of the conflict continues to change.

Candidacy Rights For Foreign Nationals
Bill passes allowing nationals from certain countries to stand as local councillors.   An electoral reform bill allowing nationals from countries where a relevant treaty has been agreed, including Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain, to become local councillors has been passed by Parliament.

Action taken to reduce waiting times for surgery
NHS Highland is offering patients surgery in other locations across the organisation in a bid to reduce the time they are waiting for their procedure.   As we work our way through the backlog of high priority cancer and urgent operations that has built up as a result of the COVID pandemic, waiting times for some day case surgical procedures at Raigmore Hospital are much longer than we would like them to be.
