Nhs Scotland Recruitment Boost
Scottish health boards have recruited more than 1,000 additional healthcare support staff and almost 200 registered nurses from overseas to help address the unprecedented challenges facing the NHS.   The support staff recruitment drive, backed by £15 million, was launched by Health Secretary Humza Yousaf last October.

Use Of Face Coverings - Changes Come Into Force 18 April
The legal requirement to wear face coverings in most indoor public spaces and on public transport will become guidance next week.   It is strongly recommended that face coverings continue to be worn where appropriate - including in indoor crowded spaces and on public transport - as members of the public are advised to carry on taking sensible precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Equipment To Farm Sustainably - Applications to open for next round
Applications to open for next round of Sustainable Agriculture Capital Grant Scheme.   Farmers, crofters and agricultural contractors will be able to apply for funding for equipment with a recognised evidence base to protect the water environment and reduce the agricultural impact on climate change and air quality.

EU Replacement Funding £151 Million Less In First Year
Business Minister Ivan McKee has said the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund fails to deliver promised funding for Scotland following the UK’s exit from the European Union.   New arrangements published today will see £32 million allocated to Scotland for 2022-2023 - £151 million short of the £183 million estimated to be an appropriate replacement for EU Structural Funds.

Early Learning Centres Numbers Increasing
The latest figures show that 111,574 children were in funded ELC places at the end of January 2022 - an increase of 20,684 (23%), since August 2021.   Of these, 88% (97,887 children) were taking advantage of the full offer of 1,140 hours of funded ELC a year.

Since April 2019, VAT-registered businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) have needed to keep VAT records digitally and send returns using Making Tax Digital (MTD) compatible software.   From April‌‌‌ 2022, these requirements will apply to all VAT-registered businesses, including those with a taxable turnover below the VAT threshold.

£1 Million To Support People With Neurological Conditions
Nineteen projects supporting people with neurological conditions are to benefit from Scottish Government backing.   As part of a five-year neurological care and support action plan, innovative projects which harness new techniques and technology will be helped by a third round of funding - with £1 million commissioned for work across Scotland.

Outlook for growth in 2022 worsens as cost increases begin to bite
From the Fraser of Allender Institute.   The Scottish economy is now above pre-pandemic levels after almost two years, but global uncertainties and inflation creates a difficult environment for consumers and businesses Scotland's growth forecast for 2022 has been revised down due to the impacts of cost increases on consumers and businesses - issues that are being exacerbated by uncertainties caused by the war in Ukraine.

Working From Home: Claiming Tax Relief From April 2022
Government instructions to work from home where possible, including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you or a close contact tested positive for coronavirus, meant that in tax years 2020 to 2021 and 2021 to 2022 millions of people across the UK were eligible to claim tax relief on additional household costs incurred due to working from home.   The rules around the eligibility of the tax relief remain unchanged.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) grants and payments issued by HMRC to support businesses and self-employed individuals during the pandemic are taxable.   If you need to complete a Company Tax Return (CT600) you must include any Coronavirus support payments made to the company.
