Returning To School Safely
Secondary pupils are being advised to take at-home COVID-19 tests before they return to school to limit the spread of Omicron.   Those without symptoms should do a lateral flow device (LFD) test the night before or on the morning of the return to classes following the festive break.

Children and staff at Newton Park Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) in Wick have been enjoying marvellous mealtimes! Dedicated staff, supported by the Excellence and Equity leads Heather Sutherland and Natalie Mackay, began looking at the lunch experience through the eyes of their children.  They then made contact with Gemma Patterson, a fellow Equity and Excellence lead, who was also working to develop the ‘marvellous meals project' within a number of Falkirk nurseries.

Scotland's Detector Dogs - Canines On The Frontline To Help Stop The Importation Of Exotic Animal Diseases
A new dog squad has been specially trained to sniff out products of animal origin (PoAO) and prevent them from entering circulation in Scotland.   The detector dogs, accompanied by handlers and funded by the Scottish Government will be based full time at airports, ports and parcel hubs across the country.

Uk Public In Favour Of Financial Support For Those Who Work In Music And Theatre
Rishi Sunak gives no help to struggling freelance musicians in announcement The Chancellor has announced an additional £1 billion of financial support to the hospitality sector, including a £30 million top-up to the Cultural Recovery Fund (CRF).   While the ISM welcomes this additional funding for the CRF, the announcement falls short in two important ways.

Covid Vaccine For 12-15 Year Olds - Bringing Forward Second Dose For Young People
Families are being urged to get young people aged 12-15 their second dose of the COVID vaccine as early as possible in the New Year.   Drop-in sessions will be available for this age group from January 3 2022, while those who have already been given a date for their second jag can call a helpline to bring their appointment forward and get protection from the virus earlier.

Essential visiting in place at Raigmore Hospital and New Craigs Hospital
NHS Highland has restricted all visiting at Raigmore Hospital and New Craigs Hospital to essential only to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19 to patients and staff.   We have seen a number of wards in both hospitals closed over the last few weeks due to the unprecedented increase in COVID-19 cases in our board area.

One Jab Every Second As Scotland Boosts By The Bells
Health Secretary Humza Yousaf has paid tribute to the people of Scotland for their collective effort and success in getting almost 2.98 million people "boosted by the bells".   Thanks to the dedication of vaccinators and frontline staff across the country, the Scottish Government has met its target of offering every eligible young person and adult over 18 an appointment by the end of the year.

Highland Council Service Arrangements Over Festive Period 2021/2022
The Highland Council advises its service users and customers of its opening hours and service arrangement over the festive period.   The Service Centre will close at 4pm on 24 December, re-opening on 29, 30 and 31 December (opening times 10am to 4pm).

The Highland Council is delighted with the success of its HERO scheme which is providing people with new job opportunities and making a real difference to the lives of many who previously were finding it hard to find employment.   Since it was launched on the 15 March 2021 HERO (Highland Employment Recruitment Offer), which is run by the Council's Employability Team, has directly supported 225 residents into employment.

2022 Set To Be The ‘year Of The Squeeze' As Wages Stall And Families Face A £1,200 Hit From Next April As Energy Bills And Taxes Rise
2022 is set to the ‘year of the squeeze', with real wages set to be no higher next Christmas than today, and families face a typical income hit of around £1,200 a year from April as a result of tax rises and soaring energy bills, according to new Resolution Foundation research published on 29 December 2021.   The Foundation’s latest quarterly Labour Market Outlook looks ahead to how workers and families will be affected by the big economic shifts in 2022.

Highland Surge - COVID-19 impact being felt in the NHS - peak is yet to come
We saw 883 new cases of COVID-19 on 28 December.  This is four times the daily average seen last week and is the highest number of new cases we have seen in one day, more than double our previous highest daily figure.

Wages And The Cost Of Living In 2022
The final three months of 2021 have been a mixed bag for the pandemic and the labour market.  At the end of September, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (JRS) came to an end after 18 months - and the feared rise in unemployment does not seem to have come to pass.

HMRC fraud squad takes back £1 billion from offenders
More than £1 billion has been recovered from the proceeds of crime and tax offenders since the formation of a specialist HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) fraud squad five years ago.   Launched in April 2016, the department's Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) has now recovered assets equivalent to funding around 20,000 NHS nurses for an entire year.

2,828 Self Assessments Filed On Christmas Day
More than 31,000 Self Assessment customers submitted their tax return for the 2020 to 2021 tax year over the festive period.   HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed that 2,828 customers filed their Self Assessment tax return on Christmas Day, compared to 2,700 in 2020.
