NATHAN WINS TOP APPRENTICE AWARD
Nathan Mackay, 20 from Watten scooped the Scotland Apprentice of the Year award at last weeks National Skills Academy for Nuclear Annual Awards ceremony in Manchester.

Nathan, employed by Rolls Royce at Vulcan completed his Modern Apprenticeship in Instrument Technician in the record time of three years and one month. His college reports from 1st year were very positive and he achieved his SVQ level 2 and NC in engineering with ease. In his 2nd and 3rd year he pushed ahead by working on his SVQ3 methodically as he carried out tasks, a very effective method to ensure efficient completion. At North Highland College he enrolled on additional classes to achieve his HND in electrical engineering by the end of his 3rd year.

Nathan also volunteered to become a STEM ambassador, representing Rolls Royce in local schools inspiring youngsters to consider an engineering career.

On winning his award, Nathan said: "I am absolutely delighted to win the award. I worked hard to complete my apprenticeship early and would recommend the Modern Apprenticeship scheme to anyone interested in an engineering career. I hope by winning this award I can encourage others to follow my example."

Nathan attended the awards ceremony with his parents, Eddie and Marilyn Mackay and Rolls Royce Human Resources Manager, John Owens.

This is the second year that Rolls Royce apprentice has won this award with Nathan's elder brother Mathew winning in 2009.

John Owens, said: "I am delighted that Nathan has won this well deserved award. It was clear right from the start that Nathan was going to do well, arriving with excellent school grades and a great enthusiasm to learn a trade in the nuclear industry. Nathan is an ambitious young man with the potential to develop a long term career in the nuclear sector."

Nathan is now attending the Nuclear Technical Personnel Course at HMS Sultan in Gosport and has commenced studying for his degree.
