Highland Council warns black ice expected into 6 December

6th December 2012

The Highland Councils Transport Environmental and Community Services have issued a warning that black ice is anticipated overnight tonight and into 6 December.

Richard Guest, Head of Roads and Community Works with TEC services said: Road surface temperatures are expected to fall as low as minus 8 overnight. A band of rain and snow will pass through the area during the early hours.

Although salt will be spread on priority routes during the evening we anticipate that there to be some wash-off and the widespread formation of black ice can be expected, which may persist well into tomorrow.

He added: All available gritters will be deployed from 6am but it will take some time to treat all the routes and motorists are asked to take extra care.

The Highland Councils snow clearing and gritting policies and maps by local area are online at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting.
