Young Caithness People Get Job Ready Experience From DSRL

A week long summer school was held in late July for students of Thurso, Wick and Farr High School students in 4th, 5th & 6th years to prepare them for the world of work.
The course, organised by DSRL (Dounreay Site restoratiopn Ltd) on behalf of the NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Agency), was supported by North Highland College and Skills Development Scotland.
DSRL is committed to the socio-economic development of the Caithness and Sutherland area, and in particular to improving the employment prospects and “job-readiness” of local school leavers. The aim of the event was to provide CV preparation and interview practice, but it was also thought useful to introduce the students to job and business opportunities in the area.
Eleven students volunteered for the free course, giving up a week of their school holidays.
The experience the students gained from this course is already showing dividends as one student has secured a joinery apprenticeship, saying that the experience gained on the course, particularly the application and interview processes were a great help to him.
DSRL will be repeating this course in 2014.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group has on 26 September 2024 published its 2023 to 2024 socio-economic report detailing a record investment in projects across the UK. Over the last five years, the NDA group has invested £60 million in projects that enable permanent and sustainable change in its site communities, leveraging many millions more from partners.
Today, the ponds inside the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (or as we like to call it, Thorp) are used to store nuclear fuel that has been used in the UK's 7 operational nuclear reactors. Before taking on this new mission, Thorp reprocessed 9,000 tonnes of used nuclear fuel from around the world, generating an estimated £9 billion in revenue for the UK over 2 decades.
