Inver House Distillers and North Highland Products launched the first ever North Highland Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, Barrogill, as part of the prestigious Mey Selections range of food and drink products, at the Castle of Mey in Caithness today.

Mey Selections Barrogill Blended Malt Scotch Whisky takes its name from the history and heritage of the Castle of Mey, the most northerly castle on the Scottish mainland just a few miles from John o'Groats. Originally built and named the Castle of Mey between 1566 and 1572 by George, 4th Earl of Caithness, it was renamed Barrogill Castle in the early seventeenth century.

Uniquely, Barrogill is blended from single malts from distilleries situated in the North Highlands of Scotland and is named after the castle's royal heritage. HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay selected the final blend of malts which make up Barrogill. The bottle carries the Mey Selections brand name and logo, incorporating a watercolour of the castle by His Royal Highness who launched the North Highland Initiative, from which the Mey Selections brand has grown.

Barrogill has a full bodied, floral and sweet fruity aroma. Its sweet and spicy flavour and a warm peaty undertone leave a long lasting finish to the palate which is complex yet balanced. Barrogill will be available throughout the UK at the recommended retail price of 19.99. It will also be distributed in export markets around the world.

Karen Walker, Marketing Manager of Inver House Distillers commented: "As a company Inver House Distillers is committed to the traditions and heritage of Scotch Whisky distillation and producing products of exceptional quality, however always open to innovation. Therefore, we were delighted to be invited to produce the first ever North Highland Blended Malt. We are thrilled with the resultant whisky, a complex but superbly balanced blended malt that we fully expect locals and the rest of the world to enjoy."

Dr John Strak, Managing Director of North Highland Products Ltd, added, "This new whisky is a landmark for the whisky industry in the North Highlands and for lovers of fine whisky around the world. Inver House has blended some great malts and added a serious piece of history to produce a drink that evokes all that is memorable about the far north of Scotland. A taste of far north, tradition, a royal heritage, and a guaranteed provenance that no other blended malt can match."

The launch coincides with the opening of the Castle of Mey's stylish new Visitor Centre and Tea Room, which offers guests the chance to taste some of the Mey Selections products and relax before taking a stroll around the historic grounds. The new facilities will be open from 1st May to 30th Sept, with the exception of 27th July to 7th August.
