Road Improvements At A99 Latheron - Single Lane Closures Starting 25th January

24th December 2015

TERM CONTRACT FOR MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SCOTTISH TRUNK ROAD
NETWORK - NORTH WEST UNIT

A99 LATHERON TO WICK SECTION STUDY - ROADSIDE SIGNING IMPROVEMENTS

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is proposing to carry out signing improvement works on the
A99 Trunk Road from the A9 junction at Latheron to the A882 junction in Wick.

It is proposed to carry out these signing improvement works to reduce the accident rate along the route. It has
been determined that accidents at junctions and those occurring on bends are most common and the signing
improvements planned are to reduce accident numbers and severities. These measures are in addition to any
routine and structural maintenance works which may be planned for the route. The signing works will be along
the entire route over a distance of approximately 27km (15 miles) with works concentrated at junction
approaches and bends. There is to be new warning signs and directional signs are being replaced. The scheme
will also include the enhancement of sections of road markings with new lane markings and reflecting road
studs.

The project will be implemented using single lane closures with temporary traffic signals and a 30mph speed
limit in accordance with Chapter 8 of the traffic signs manual, in order to maintain a safe working environment.
The restrictions will only be in place whilst the new signing is installed and it is anticipated that the works will
gradually move northwards from Latheron, with any delays limited to a few minutes, thus having a minimal
impact on any journeys.

The works are programmed to commence on Monday 25th January 2016 and be undertaken Monday to Friday
typically between 8am and 4pm. The overall construction duration of the project is likely to be approximately
20 days.

BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland wish to apologise in advance for any disturbance these works may
cause.
