Two Wick Businesses Pick Up Awards

WINNERS OF HIGHLAND BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 ANNOUNCED.

Pultneytown Peoples Project and Mackays Hotel.

Recognition was given to the achievements of businesses across the Highlands as the winners of the prestigious Highland Business Awards 2016 were unveiled at a capacity lunch and awards ceremony at the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness.

Organised by Inverness Chamber of Commerce, and backed by media partner Scottish Provincial Press, as part of Highland Business Week 2016, the Highland Business Awards were attended by over 300 business men and women from across the region.

Winners and finalists across the broad range of awards categories were recognised for their contribution to the economic success of the Highlands.

Pulteneytown People's Project is contracted to deliver The Employability Fund Programme for Skills Development Scotland (SDS).  The purpose of the programme is to prepare people for employment or further training opportunities in their chosen work interest area, by supporting them to improve their knowledge and basic skills required for their chosen sector.  The programme focuses on work-based knowledge, skills and experience to be gained both within our training centre and on work placements, with any relevant training needs being addressed as per each participant’s individual training plan.

Early in February the first two in a series of workshops specifically for anyone working in the local food and drink sector will take place to highlight how social media can be best used to increase profit, support other local businesses and promote the area.   The workshops follow on from the project The Highland Council ran last year across the Highlands to investigate the potential and appetite for developing an industry-led local food and drink network that could co-ordinate and drive future activities to support the local food and drink sector in the region.

The Highland Council is to take a lead role in helping businesses save money, be more competitive and reduce their environmental impact by using resources more efficiently, by backing the national Resource Efficiency Pledge scheme.  The Resource Efficiency Pledge is a new scheme from Resource Efficient Scotland, a programme of Zero Waste Scotland which works with businesses to help them reduce both their running costs and carbon emissions.

Inspired by the success of the London 2012 Olympics Gamesmakers, Mackays Hotel in Wick has become the latest organisation in the UK to gain national recognition for its dedication to excellent customer service, joining an elite segment of hospitality businesses that have achieved the status.   The family run hotel received news this week that it is the first hotel in Caithness & Sutherland to be awarded WorldHost Recognised Business status, a training programme that was used to train the tens of thousands of staff and volunteers for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and nearly one million people worldwide, in exceptional customer service.

Boost for Pultneytown Advice Centre
At todays Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee members awarded Pulteneytown Peoples project 90,506 from the Deprived Area Fund which will be used to provide services to local people through the Advice Centre.   This will be used to support the work of the one-stop shop to provide local people help and advice with benefits, staying on at school, re-training, housing issues and applying for jobs.

Car hire available over the weekends In Wick
Mackays Hotel is delighted to announce in collaboration with Richards Garage car hire vehicles will be available from the hotel outwith normal working hours, including Saturday and Sunday.   Murray Lamont, of Mackays Hotel, commented that he felt there was a gap in the market and particularly on a Sunday when there was no public transport to John O'Groats.

Caithness District Partnership Meeting
The new Caithness District Partnership will meet in full for the second time on Friday 28 September, as part of the new arrangements under the Planning for Integration (P4i) partnership between the NHS and The Highland Council.   Partners will consider a report from the NHS steering group, who are recommending a Stakeholder Engagement Plan.
