Council Election - Matthew Reiss - Independent - Thurso And North West Caithness
7th April 2017
Centralisation in Caithness is damaging for us and our futures. Examples include the illogical new Ward boundaries, loss of emergency control rooms, planning decisions overturned in Edinburgh and the desperate situation with our hospitals/ambulances.
As as Independent Councillor, free from any central political control, I have resisted these Central Belt led cuts and personally challenged NHS and Fire Service Chiefs and others,to protect our County. Independent Councillors have, in particular, supported CHAT.
One recent positive result of the campaigning is the NHS promise to spend more on Ambulance cover. This means new jobs in Caithness. I will make sure this promise is fulfilled.
I have also prevented reductions in evening gritting, secured funding for a new minibus for Thurso High School and politely persuaded SSE to pay more to repair damaged roads. The Independent led Council has put some extra funding into road repairs, which are currently being carried out across the county.
The Centralisation threats are serious but I, and my Independent Landward colleagues, have made sure Caithness is no longer ignored. And we intend to continue bringing more powers back to this side of the Ord.
If re-elected I hope to start work on enhancing Thurso town centre, tourism and business opportunities and I give you my word I will continue to stand up for everything good in Caithness.
