Luke Graham - Scottish Liberal Democrats - Wick & East Caithness
10th April 2017
"I'm standing to be your local councillor because I feel strongly about the community I have lived in all of my life. I couldn't sit by while local people and the communities we live in are being ignored and while key services are being cut or downgraded.
Whether it’s standing up for our health services or improving public transport, I want to be a fresh face for our community and a councillor who gets things done.
Too often the issues and concerns of the Far North and Caithness are dismissed and ignored by an out-of-touch council. I will be a strong voice for our area, standing up to make your concerns heard in Inverness and the Highland Council.
Our area has suffered because of the centralisation of services and amenities, meaning jobs and investment have been lost to Inverness, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. I want this to stop.
I will always put local people and our communities first. I will listen to you and fight to get the best deal for our area.
I pledge to stand up for and protect the our vital NHS services in Caithness. Downgrades and cuts have brought the services in the Far North to their brink. This trend must be reversed. The people of Caithness deserve the same quality of service that anyone in a major city receives, and current levels of provision only let’s the community down.
In a rural area like ours Public Transport is vital for many people to live their lives. Links must be improved, with rail travel a particular issue as it takes over four hours to travel from Wick to Inverness by train. Ask any motorist in Caithness and they will tell you the shocking state many of our roads are left in, with potholes and uneven surfaces causing much concern. We can and must do better to provide the services our community deserves.
A vote for me and the Liberal Democrats this May is a positive vote for a fresh voice to change our area for the better."
