UKAEA secures role in Europe's new spallation source

UKAEA has been selected to supply the Hot Cell Remote Handling Facility for the new €1.8 billion European Spallation Source (ESS).
ESS is currently under construction in Sweden. The Hot Cell is a critical downstream support facility to handle and process components from the target station. The Hot Cell consists of handling equipment such as power manipulators and cranes, processing equipment for remote cutting and welding, shielding and transit cases, all fully remote-controlled via a central control system.
The design and development activities will be led within UKAEA by RACE - UKAEA's remote handling and robotics centre. In 2014 RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) was awarded government funding to construct a new facility and build on the extensive remote handling capabilities developed over 20 years at Culham in support of the JET European fusion research programme.
The UK’s overall contribution to the ESS project is led by the Science & Technologies Facilities Council (STFC). Robert McGreevy, Director of the ISIS facility in STFC, said:

Yesterday, Monday 20 November 2023, leaders from the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), and the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) reaffirmed their commitment to share their knowledge, experience and technology in relation to the management of radioactive waste.
Today, Monday 20 November, the NDA has opened registration for its tenth nuclear decommissioning supply chain event, which will be held at The International Centre in Telford on 27 June 2024. Launched in 2011, the supply chain event has gone on to attract a total of around 10,000 visitors from more than 20 countries over the years, representing thousands of companies both large and small.
A key programme of work at the Low Level Waste Repository in Cumbria is making real progress. The Repository, which is part of Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) and manages disposal of the UK's low level radioactive waste, has started key work on the final capping of historic trenches and vaults which are now full and ready for permanent closure.
