The Highland Council is holding a Credit Crunch seminar next week to see what can be done to stimulate the housing market locally and ensure that the Council meets its target for the provision of new private and affordable housing. The seminar will take place at the Lochardil Hotel, Inverness, on Wednesday 29 October and the Council has invited leading developers, financial institutions, Scottish Government officials and other housing stake holders to join them to discuss the current issues and identify how these can be tackled to create long term sustainability in the market.

The Highland Council is hosting a conference next month which aims to support and promote the wider use of local food, products and services. Organised by The Highland Council's Planning and Development Service, the one-day event, entitled Local Food in the Highlands, will take place at the Council Chamber, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, on Friday 7 November 2008 The conference is targeted at all those involved in making local food available in The Highland Council area - producers, processors, distributors and buyers - and aims to: • bring together those involved in production of local food and its distribution with those involved in public procurement.

The Highland Council is warning Highland businesses not to be duped after complaints that several companies have received bogus high pressure sales telephone calls requesting them to sponsor leaflets, booklets and other materials for their local schools. They are also advising people that new national regulations have been introduced to protect businesses from misleading advertising by other businesses.

The Highland Council was singled out for national praise because of the high quality of its 135 public toilets. At a time when other Councils are closing facilities across the UK, The Highland Council said that it recognises the importance of providing well-maintained and welcoming toilets, especially when it comes to encouraging tourism and are setting aside £300,000 a year for refurbishment and replacement of facilities.
