After almost 21 years of training chefs, beauticians and hairdressers, the North Highland College UHI's House of Morven would like to invite past students, employers, staff and graduates back for a 21st birthday party on Monday 1st June.   The House of Morven originally opened its doors on 6th June 1994 and has since seen thousands of students begin their careers within the service industries with them.

Beauty Therapy students from the North Highland College UHI have recently returned from a trip to the Professional Beauty Exhibition at the ExCel in London.   With more than 800 brands, including Clarins, 3D Lipo, CACI, Dermalogica, CND and OPI the exhibition houses all the different aspects of the beauty industry.

A NEW partnership agreement has been signed to develop and deliver training required at the Dounreay site during decommissioning work and help staff gain the qualifications they need to transfer to other employment sectors as the site closure progresses.   Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL), responsible for the clean-up and demolition of Britain's former centre of fast reactor research and development, has established a memorandum of understanding with North Highland College UHI and the University of the Highlands and Islands to help close collaboration working and academic links across further and higher education and the nuclear industry.

Students and staff at the North Highland College UHI are delighted after attending the annual LANTRA awards ceremony last week in the Dunblane Hydro Hotel.   Gamekeeping modern apprentice Callum Low and NC Gamekeeping with Wildlife Management student Mary Bowman both were both nominated for Game and Wildlife Learner of the Year award.

A chef from Thurso has been named as the Young Highland Chef of 2014.  23 year old Robert Smith beat off competition from six other finalists to win the title at last night's cook-off, held at the Burghfield House Hotel in Dornoch.

Two local apprentices and students of the North Highland College UHI have won awards at the National Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) competition.   Graeme Robert Gray (22) and Murray Mackintosh (20) broke records earlier this year when they won both the first and second stage categories for the North of Scotland - the first time in the history of the competition that a single college has won both awards.  
Invitation to Tender for Framework Contractors
North Highland College UHI wish to invite tenders from suitably qualified contractors to be placed on a preferred contractor's framework for planned and reactive maintenance at their sites in Caithness, Sutherland and Ross-shire.  The College will require separate trade tenders for each of the trades listed below and suppliers can tender for more than one trade - but separately - if they have the requisite skills.

Last week, fourteen North Highland College UHI students celebrated the completion of a new six week summer programme aimed to help young people into employment, by providing essential training to progress into sustained employment within the Engineering Sector.   From July to August the students have developed engineering employability skills, industry standard training and gained a suite of statutory certificates.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today broke the ground on the new £48.5 million Wick Community Campus.   The facility, which will replace Wick High School, Pulteneytown Academy Primary School, and South Primary School, is part of Scotland's Schools for the Future programme and will receive more than £17 million from the Scottish Government.  
Thurso college facility to host high level apprentice engineer pilot
Engineering students at North Highland College will get the chance to get hands on work experience as part of a new course based in Thurso.   The move follows a recommendation by the Commission for Developing Scotland's Young Workforce to increase the number of higher level apprenticeship opportunities and to ensure those undertaking high level qualifications receive enhanced levels of work experience.

Two local apprentices who are students of the North Highland College UHI have won both 1st and 2nd Year Apprentice of the Year awards for the North of Scotland.   This is the first time in the history of the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) competition that a single college has won both of these categories.

GILLS BAY/PENTLAND FIRTH'S INNER SOUND VISIT BY DELEGATES TO TOP-LEVEL INNOVATION CONFERENCE HOSTED BY THURSO'S ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE, PART OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS.   A top team of Scottish-based scientists, engineers and academics sailed out to the Pentland Firth's Inner Sound from Gills Bay on a fact-finding mission to see at first hand the fast-flowing waters above the seabed site of the UK's first planned 'marine electricity' power-station.

Eleven trainee welders from North Highland College UHI and Inverness College UHI went head to head in a college weld challenge last week, with the first heat based at Inverness Longman campus, and the second at North Highland's state-of-the-art engineering, technology and energy centre.   The students were selected from the 72 full time and apprentice welders currently training at the two colleges.

£40,000 Awarded To Establish A Maklab At Wick High School
MAKLAB is one of several projects to benefit from SSE’s new £1m Highland Sustainable Fund.   It received an award of £40,000 (90% match funding) to establish a MAKLab North workshop at Wick High School and mobile MAKLAB to deliver access and skills training in digital fabrication technology across the Highland region.
