£2million Plan For Closure At Landfill Site
Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd wants to restore an area of land designated as a rubble dump during the construction and operation phases of the site.   An estimated 70,000m3 of material from the construction and demolition of buildings was deposited in the area beyond the eastern perimeter of the site from 1960 or so.  
Caithness & North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership - Update 20 December
Weeks commencing 13th & 20th December The Partnership's Executive Board met last week, and discussed the draft 2011-2014 Caithness & North Sutherland Action Plan.  I will be making revisions to the Plan based on our discussions, and circulating a revised version aimed at honing down even further our priority activities.  
Report Predicts Growth For Tourism In Caithness and Sutherland
A report for Highlands and Islands Enterprise says that visitor numbers in Caithness and Sutherland could increase by more than 30% over the next ten years.   The study was carried out for the social and economic development agency to look at current and future leisure and business demand to help accommodation providers in the area plan for growth.

Week commencing 22nd November This week's main focus has been finalising a draft of the delivery programme that describes how the partners will achieve the aims set out in our 2011-2014 Action Plan.  In developing this draft programme I have been working with collegues from HIE in particular.  
HIE Board backs £13m investment in major projects
Businesses and communities in Caithness, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides look set to benefit from investment in major infrastructure projects approved today (Monday 22 November) by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).   The HIE Board (Monday 22 November) has approved grants totalling more than £13m to develop three major projects.  
HIE Comment in response to Rok Announcement
Highlands and Islands Enterprise has been in contact with Rok's administrators, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC).  We are seeking an early meeting with PwC to discuss both the future of the business as a whole and how we progress specific HIE projects currently being delivered by Rok.

A Thurso based engineering company which has been supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has successfully diversified into the offshore wind industry.   Calder Engineering Ltd has been supplying cabins to the offshore oil and gas industry for 12 months ago and has recently won a contract to supply them to the renewables industry.

HIE to help innovative businesses create hundreds of jobs across the region
A £2.4 million project to place 350 fresh academic minds in ambitious businesses across the region is being introduced by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).   Over the next three years small and medium sized businesses and social enterprises from across the region will be supported to employ university students, graduates and post-graduates for up to a year.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is boosting the opportunities for its businesses to seek out new international markets.   The development agency is increasing the numbers of Highlands and Islands dedicated staff working within Scottish Development International (SDI), which offers access to business support internationally, including operations in 27 countries.  
HIE Severance Scheme Produces over £2m Annual Saving
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) becomes a leaner organisation this month when 53 members of staff leave their posts through voluntary severance on March 31.   The move is calculated to produce a total of £2.02m of saving each year which will be reallocated to direct support for economic growth across the region.

People working to grow some of the Highlands and Islands most fragile communities are to benefit from free online access to a range of top tips and advice.   The Scottish Community Land Network (SCLN) website, funded by HIE, has published a training package aimed at supporting anyone involved in community driven activities.

500th Request For Business Assistance
The Business information and advice service for the Highland and Moray Councils which is delivered by The Highland Council's Enterprise Trust, Highland Opportunity Limited, has just reached its first major milestone today with at total of 500 requests for advice and assistance having been received since the service started on 1st April.   Enquiries to Business Gateway have come via the national website www.bgateway.com and the national telephone number 0845 609 6611 and 30% of enquiries have come from people visiting the walk-in shops in Inverness and Elgin where business advisers are on hand to answer queries and provide information.  
'Everybody Online - Caithness'
'Everybody Online - Caithness', the first project of its kind in the Highlands, is being launched to allow locals who have never had the chance to use the internet to discover what it can do.  The project being funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), with the support of BT Scotland, is run by a national charity 'Citizens Online' and aims to use technology to help communities counter social disadvantage.

Plans For £1 Million Upgrade To Wick High School Unveiled
Plans for a £1 million upgrade of Wick High School have been unveiled to staff and parent representatives.   It is hoped that work can start during the summer following a competitive tendering process on a 25-week contract to extend the dining facilities and upgrade and extend the gymnasium changing facilities.
