New Package To Support And Enforce Self-isolation - £500 To Stay Home For Low Income People
A new package has been announced to support and enforce self-isolation.   People will be required by law to self-isolate from 28 September, supported by payment of £500 for those on lower incomes who cannot work from home and have lost income as a result.

Tackling Violence Against Women And Girls - £4.25m Extra Funding For Frontline Services
Women and children experiencing or at risk of violence and domestic abuse will have increased access to support, with £4.25 million of additional funding for charities and projects across Scotland.   The additional investment will help respond to an increase in demand from victims of abuse for support services during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The outdoor use of metaldehyde, a pesticide used to control slugs on farms and in gardens, is set to be banned in Great Britain from the end of March 2022 in order to better protect wildlife and the environment, farming Minister Victoria Prentis announced today.   The decision takes into account advice from the UK Expert Committee on Pesticides (ECP) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) about the risks that metaldehyde poses to birds and mammals.

A new report sets out how we must focus on reducing our dependence on single-use items and highlights the impact the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had on people's behaviour, with new single-use items becoming part of everyday life.   It proposes five principles that can be used to consider how single-use items like cups, cutlery and sauce sachets can be reduced or replaced with alternatives to help combat waste and support Scotland's journey to net zero.

Make sure you check guidance before importing and exporting products which are covered by CITES.   As this year's London Fashion Week gets underway, the government is urging consumers and the fashion industry to check new guidance effective from January 2021 around importing and exporting products which are covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

FORT WILLIAM, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 19th) sold 365 weaned calves and store cattle, 16 OTM cattle and 5 adult head of breeding cattle.   Bullocks (205) averaged 268.4p (+48.1p on the year) and sold to 352.9p per kg for a 170kg Limousin cross from 5 Burnside, Argyll, and £945 gross for a pen of 410kg Limousin crosses from Lurignish Farm, Appin..

Helping High Growth Start-ups - Creating jobs of the future
High growth start-up companies and university spinout projects will receive grants to help them grow in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.   Part of a £3 million package of support, the funding provides grants of up to £50,000 for 41 high growth potential start-ups and up to £130,000 for 16 spinout projects.

Emergency Support Instrument Update
The UK has secured £31 million in funding through the European Union's mobility package to assist the UK's coronavirus response.   This will fund some of the costs associated with the transporting of equipment and items of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the UK from overseas.

Turbine parts for the Halsary Wind farm near Spittal began arriving at Wick harbour this week with more arriving on Sunday 20th September 2020.   15 turbines capable of producing 30 mg will be erected to a height of 120 metres to the blade tips.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 18th) sold 7,856 store lambs.   Blackface lambs (6,404) sold to £83 gross for ewe lambs from Talisker Estate, Portree Other breeds (1,452) sold to £77 gross for Mule lambs from Achnabat, Torness.

The Highland Council is calling on the UK Government to help resolve the inequity of fuel poverty experienced in the Highlands of Scotland where people pay more for fuel and energy than other regions in the UK.   Leader of The Highland Council, Cllr Margaret Davidson has written to the UK Government's Minister of State (Minister for Business, Energy and Clean Growth) The Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP calling on the government to replace the current electricity distribution system with one that replicates that of gas and telecoms and share the cost of energy distribution equally across the UK.
