Failure to maintain the £20 a week Covid top-up payment for universal credit by the Government will overwhelmingly hit the incomes of working and disabled people, and put more than 700,000 into poverty, according to a study by the Fabian Society.   Government they will decide in early March whether to keep or scrap the temporary 12-month Covid payment - giving claimants just a month to plan for what could be a £1,050 a year cut in benefits.

Almost all of the factual detail behind the design of Simec Atlantis Energy 's AR series of tidal turbines was developed through R& D works done by technicians and devices in the Pentland Firth's Inner Sound from work-boats (mainly 'multicats') temporarily based at Gills Bay harbour which is just one mile away from its MeyGen sub-sea site.   The first AR turbine (1.5 MW) is there, whilst plans are actively being made for the deployment of at least two upgraded turbines.

Driving Instructors And Mobile/home-based Close Contact Businesses Facing Huge Problems Accessing Much Needed Support Funds
Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Alex Rowley has raised a motion in the Scottish Parliament highlighting significant problems with the newly launched Mobile and Home-Based Close Contact Service Providers Fund after complications were raised due to the way in which the fund is being administered.   Applicants to the fund, which is meant for owners and operators of mobile and home-based close contact service businesses and for registered driving instructors, have received automatic rejections due to errors with the system.

Government Gives Businesses Much-needed Breathing Space With Extension Of Insolvency Measures
Measures from the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act extended to relieve pressure on businesses dealing with coronavirus.   Update February 2021 The government announced it intends to extend the power (granted through the Corporate Governance and Insolvency Act) to make temporary amendments or modify the effects of corporate insolvency and governance legislation for an additional year.

Non-domestic Rates Relief Extended - No Charges For All Of 21/22 and more....
Retail, tourism, hospitality and aviation businesses will pay no rates during 2021-22 under proposals outlined today.   It is one of a series of measures proposed by Finance Secretary Kate Forbes following confirmation of a further £1.1 billion of consequential funding arising from UK Government coronavirus (COVID-19) spending.

Guidance on arrangements for the phased reopening of schools in February/March 2021.   Purpose This guidance has been issued in response to the First Minister's statement to Parliament on 2 February 2021 announcing a phased return to in-person learning in schools from 22 February which was confirmed on 16 February.

Remote Learning To Continue For Majority of Pupils In Scotland
The majority of primary and secondary school pupils will continue with remote learning until at least mid-March while children in early learning and childcare (ELC) and primaries 1 to 3 will return full-time to classrooms from Monday 22 February.   First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that only strictly limited numbers of children and young people will return to classrooms next week, backed by strengthened school safety guidance and an enhanced testing for staff and senior pupils.

The Scottish Government has paid out more than £190,000 to eligible young people to help with the costs of starting a new job.   A total of 695 successful applications were made for the new Job Start Payment from its launch on 17 August 2020 to 31 December 2020.
