Rail services between London, Essex and Cambridgeshire have been brought into government ownership after the third train company was nationalised today 12 October 2025. Greater Anglia will soon be joined by West Midlands Trains, which will be nationalised on February 1, 2026. Govia Thameslink Railway, the largest operator in the UK, will follow on May 31, 2026. Historical Nationalisation British Rail (1948-1997) Nationalised: 1948 under the Transport Act 1947 All major railway companies in the UK were merged into a single state-owned company called British Railways, later known as British Rail. Privatised: Between 1994-1997, British Rail was broken up and sold off to private companies. Current Nationalised / Government-Owned Rail Operators (as of 2025) Several train operating companies (TOCs) have returned to government ownership in recent years due to poor performance or franchise failures. These are operated under the "Operator of Last Resort" (OLR) — a government-owned entity. 1. LNER (London North Eastern Railway) Nationalised since: 2018 Took over the East Coast Main Line after Virgin Trains East Coast failed. 2. Northern Trains Nationalised since: 2020 Took over from Arriva Rail North due to poor performance and service issues. 3. Southeastern Nationalised since: 2021 Operated by SE Trains, a government-owned company, after previous operator Govia failed to declare over £25 million in taxpayer funds. 4. TransPennine Express Nationalised since: 2023 Brought under government control after ongoing reliability issues under FirstGroup. 5. ScotRail Nationalised since: 2022 The Scottish Government took over operations from Abellio. ScotRail is now run by ScotRail Trains Ltd, a publicly owned company. 6. Caledonian Sleeper Nationalised since: 2023 Also taken over by the Scottish Government. Wales Transport for Wales (TfW Rail) Nationalised since: 2021 Welsh rail services were brought into public ownership due to the financial impact of COVID-19 on the franchise model.
