North MSP hails jobs boost for the far North

24th April 2013

On a week when some local businesses announced they were closing, including well known shoe shop DE Shoes, and the last maker of refrigerators in the UK- Icetech Freezers of Castletown, a company that provides services for the Norwegian oil and gas industry is to open its first supply base in Scotland.

NorSea Group, which operates nine sites in Norway, has signed an agreement with Scrabster Harbour Authority to set up a base in Caithness.

Trust chairman William Calder said “Scrabster offered access to oil and gas fields west of Shetland”.

NorSea Group also hopes to be able to supply new renewable energy projects.

Highlands & Islands (Labour) MSP Rhoda Grant said “ This is indeed a welcome boost for job opportunities and the local economy on a week when an unprecedented number of our local businesses had to announce they were closing down. Credit must go to the Management of the Scrabster Harbour Authority who have gone out there and found this company and encouraged them to set up in the far North”.

Rhoda Grant further stated “Even more exciting is the prospect of this company being in a position to supply renewable energy projects, which will undoubtedly create even more jobs and help strengthen the economy of the North.
