Next Steps for Postcode Campaign Confirmed

4th March 2014

North MSP, Rhoda Grant has met with the Chair of Thurso Community Council, Bob Earnshaw at the Pentland Hotel last Friday (28th February) to discuss how best to support the campaign to establish a new postcode for Caithness and Sutherland.

Chairman Bob Earnshaw, Cllr Roger Saxon and Rhoda Grant MSP agreed that the campaign should be carried forward and that Mr Earnshaw would raise the issue at the next meeting of the Association of Caithness Community Councils, which is due to take place on Tuesday 4th March.

Speaking after the meeting Mrs Grant said:“Last Friday I met with Thurso Community Council members to discuss how best to progress the campaign with their support. The John O’Groat Journal also published the results of their survey asking people for thoughts and comments on the change of postcode last Friday. The results clearly showed a majority of people in favour of establishing a new postcode for Caithness.

“There is increasingly a case to support the change, not only for reasons of improved service and potentially reduced delivery costs but the argument of strengthened local identity, something which Bob Earnshaw also raised at the meeting.

“I am pleased that the issue will now be raised at the Association of Caithness Community Councils meeting tonight, clearly the Thurso group think this would benefit the local area and I am keen to hear what other local groups think.

Asked about how to progress the campaign further Mrs Grant continued,“If the Association is supportive of the change the next step would be to approach the local chamber of commerce to put forward the business argument for change. The Royal Mail would find it difficult to ignore the court of public opinion, if the people, communities and business of Caithness signal they want a change it could force a change.”
