Berriedale Braes Road Improvement Another Step Closer
24th March 2017
The procurement of the scheme will begin in the new financial year, with construction planned for 2018.
Transport Scotland continues to work closely with the following funding Partners to progress this project:
Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
HITRANs
The Highland Council
Made orders were published on 24 March 2017.
The difficult topography means that two HGVs driving in opposite directions cannot pass on the hairpin bend as one vehicle takes up most of the carriageway in order to negotiate the bend.
The purpose of the scheme is to remove the hairpin bend and improve the alignment.
When completed, the scheme will improve journey time reliability and road safety by removing the need for vehicles to slow down or stop to negotiate the bend.
Road safety issues at Berriedale Braes were highlighted in May 2010 when a serious accident was avoided when the barrier on the bend stopped a school bus from going over the edge.
