Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT) have been successful in their bid to secure EU Highland LEADER funding to add to their already announced securement of Caithness & North Sutherland Funding (C&NSF)to enable them to deliver the "Destination Thurso" project.

Funding awarded of £33.5k by EU Highland LEADER and £5k by C&NSF will see the employment of a Tourism Development Officer until November 2019 to deliver a programme which includes a one-stop shop "Destination Thurso website and social media, localisation workshops and through consulting the community a tourism development plan for Thurso.

Joan Lawrie, Voluntary Project Officer for TCDT stated "We're really excited to make this our first confirmed project for TCDT. A key issue raised in our community consultation in March 2018 was the need to develop tourism in the town, we've listed to the community and gone out to secure the funding to make this happen. With our Tourism Development Officer in post we'll be looking at everything from supporting our existing tourism, traders and attractions via a Visit Thurso style website and social media to looking to the future in consulting the community and service providers to form a tourism blueprint for the future in a tourism development plan.

The process of forming the tourism development plan will look at everything from signage for tourists, making more of our already amazing attractions to what activities such as festivals or further attractions could be developed in the town."

Tracey Taylor, Chair of TCDT stated, “The overall aim of the project is the same as our aim for Thurso through TCDT - working together as a community we can make Thurso a better place to live, work and visit. The community will be consulted throughout the project and have a chance to give their thoughts and idea. We also urge anyone who is interested to get involved whether interested community member, tourism business or town centre trader to join our focus groups looking in more detail at the project."

TCDT have commenced the recruitment process for the Tourism Development Officer and hope to have an individual in place shortly. In the meantime they are keen to spread word of the project and those interested in learning more including how to get involved are invited to a meeting in Caithness Horizons Education Room on Thursday 25 October at 7pm. Alternatively, if you are unable to make the meeting but wish to get involved contact TCDT on info@thursocdt.co.uk
