Council Tax Reduction For Almost Half A Million Scots

4th December 2018

Scotland's Chief Statistician today released the latest Council Tax Reduction estimates. In September 2018, Scotland's Council Tax Reduction scheme supported 481,100 households and the total weekly income foregone by local authorities was £6.5 million.

The total number of Council Tax Reduction claimants in September 2018 was 12.9 per cent less (71,280 claimants) than it was at the beginning of the scheme in April 2013. Generally, the decline in the number of claimants has been gradual over this period. However, increases and reform to Council Tax and CTR in April 2017 and a further increase in Council Tax in April 2018 has led to some additional increases in income forgone.
