Rising Council Tax will be another squeeze on low-income Scots

5th February 2019

The Scottish budget presented by Derek Mackay MSP the Scottish Government finance minister will give councils the chance to raise council tax by up to 4.79%. This is slightly higher than the 3% allowed last year after several years of council tax freeze.

An article in Common Space analyses whit it will mean for the poor and notes that the Greens who supported the SNP to pass the budget did not look closely at the affect on households on low incomes who will pay the same amount as someone earning 3 times their income.

The government claims correctly that the budget for councils is increasing but it comes with more responsibilities and ring fencing. There will be more cuts to services continuing the decline of the last few years.
