Cost of living crisis dragging country into recession - and seven steps to avoid it

An article published in The Mirror newspaper on 22 April 2022 written by Richard Murphy and Danny Blanchflower sets out ways to avoid recession.

Bill Fernie, a candidate for Wick and East Caithness in the Highland council elections said, I am a regular follower of Richard Murphy's astute observations on the economy on his web site and agree with the conclusions they reach in the article in the Mirror. The main issues of taxes, interest rates, failure to increase benefits, EU alignment all beg the question of why the government seems to be doing the opposite of what is required.

Politicians are talking about a cost of living crisis. But with major energy suppliers fearing that four in 10 households will not be able to afford to properly heat their homes this winter it is much more than a cost of living crisis.

It is a poverty crisis, which is creating the risk of recession. Worryingly, none of the major economic forecasters - even the International Monetary Fund, which predicts that by 2023 the UK will be the slowest growing country in the G7 (with growth at 1.2%) - seem to understand the UK faces a major risk of a recession.
