The Evidence Is Growing Of Harmful Effects Of Vaping On Eggs And Sperm - Taxes To The Rescue

3rd October 2024

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are often considered a "safe substitute" for conventional cigarette cessation. The composition of the fluid is not always clearly defined and shows a large variation within brands and manufacturers.

More than 80 compounds were detected in liquids and aerosols.

E-cigarettes contain nicotine, and the addition of flavorings increases the toxicity of e-cigarette vapour in a significant manner. The heat generated by the e-cigarette leads to the oxidation and decomposition of its components, eventually forming harmful constituents in the inhaled vapour.

The effects of these toxicants on male and female reproduction are well established in conventional cigarette smokers. Although toxins were measured at much lower levels in e-cigarette aerosols compared to smoke from a conventional cigarette, there are concerns about their potential impact on male and female reproduction.

The information available was mainly obtained from studies conducted in animal models, and investigations in humans are scarce. However, the effects observed in animal models suggest that caution should be taken when vaping and that more research needs to be conducted to identify its potential adverse effects on fertility.

The prevalence of e-cigarette usage is alarming, and warnings should be made about the impact of vaping on reproductive health. This document reviews the data regarding the impact of e-cigarette use on male and female reproduction.

Can vaping cause birth defects?
There is evidence to suggest that exposure to e-cigarettes during pregnancy has the potential to harm maternal and fetal health and cause adverse effects, including increased systemic inflammation, low birth weight, preterm birth, and small size for gestational age status.

How bad is vaping for sperm?
The answer is yes. While vaping has been marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, emerging research suggests that it may have adverse effects on male fertility. Additionally, impaired sperm quality, hormonal imbalances, DNA damage, and oxidative stress have all been associated with vaping.

And Guess What - The Government is set to increase taxes on Vapes
Yes, vapes are subject to tax in the UK:
VAT: Vapes are currently subject to 20% VAT, but no additional levy.
Vaping Products Duty: The UK government announced a new Vaping Products Duty in the 2024 Budget, which will be introduced from October 2026. The duty will be based on the amount of nicotine in the vape liquid, with higher rates for products with more nicotine:
£1 per 10ml for nicotine-free liquids
£2 per 10ml for liquids that contain 0.1-10.9mg
£3 per 10ml for liquids that contain 11mg or more

The government's goal is to discourage young people and non-smokers from vaping. However, some say that the tax could make it harder for ex-smokers to afford to stay smoke-free. Others say that the tax could incentivize vapers to use lower nicotine strength e-liquids, which may reduce switching rates and Vaping Aerosols[/url]

Less proven but the evidence is growing
Chemicals causing cancer
Vaping products contain chemicals that can damage cells and may cause cancer. While the levels of cancer-causing chemicals in e-cigarette aerosol are lower than in cigarette smoke, some chemicals in vaping cartridges can break down and produce known or suspected carcinogens.

So just as with tobacco many years ago the evidence took along time to come out. But it is growing so you don't want to be told in 10 or 20 years you should not have vaped.
