Town Sees Second National Lottery Winner In Six Months
An off shore mechanic from Wick and his wife are celebrating after winning £282,940.50 in the EuroMillions draw on Tuesday 7 June 2011 by matching all five main numbers and one lucky star.
John Sutherland (41) and his wife Angela waited five weeks to validate their ticket as John departed on the day of the draw for his off shore job with Schlumberger.
John said: "My wife Angela checked our ticket the day after the draw, at which point I was working off-shore. When she called to tell me I just couldn't believe it; I was in shock."
Angela, who is a stay at home mum, said: "Those five weeks felt like the longest of my life. I kept the ticket locked away in a safe, but kept going back to check the numbers again and again to make sure it was real.
"I told close frien
ds and family, but it was only when John arrived back on shore it really sunk in we'd won. We were thrilled!"
The Sutherland's are Wick's second National Lottery winners this year after Alastair Cameron and his wife Isobel scooped the £500,000 Thunderball jackpot on Saturday 5 March 2011. Both tickets were bought at the Tesco store in Wick.
The couple has three young girls, who are now looking forward to a family holiday in Florida thanks to the win.
The Sutherlands also plan to pay off their mortgage and enhance an extension to their home. Meanwhile, Angela has her eye on a brand new purple mini.
John, who will continue to work off shore, said: "We'd never won anything before other than a flutter on the Grand National. This win has enabled us to make plans we'd only ever dreamed of."
