Launch Of The Energy Markets Finance Scheme
HM Treasury and the Bank of England are today opening the Energy Market Financing Scheme (EMFS) for applications.   The EMFS was announced by the Prime Minister on 8 September, and in The Growth Plan the then Chancellor confirmed that it will provide a 100% guarantee to commercial banks to provide additional lending to energy firms.

In line with its financial stability objective, the Bank of England has carried out temporary and targeted purchases of long-dated UK government bonds since 28 September.  The Bank increased the maximum size of its daily auctions from £5bn to £10bn on 10 October.

Jeremy Hunt Rewrites Government's Entire Economic Policy, Setting Taxes On Course To Rise To Their Highest Level Since 1950, And Energy Bills To Rise To £4,000 Next Spring
The new Chancellor has reversed 60 per cent of the mini-Budget's tax cuts and committed to scale back energy bill support next year in order to reduce the pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates, and on the Treasury to cut public spending, the Resolution Foundation said today (Monday 17 October 2022).   The Foundation notes that Jeremy Hunt has not only reversed the majority of the mini-Budget tax cuts, but also scrapped Rishi Sunak’s 1p cut to the basic rate of income tax.

Avian Influenza Prevention Zone Declared In Scotland And Across Great Britain
Following an increase in the number of detections of avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds and other captive birds, the Chief Veterinary Officers from England, Scotland and Wales have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across Great Britain to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading amongst poultry and other captive birds.   This means that from 12:00 noon on Monday 17 October, it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers in Great Britain to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu.

Britain's £26 Billion Mortgage Hike - Five Million Households Set For Average Mortgage Bill Increases Of £5,100 By End Of 2024
Over five million families are set to see their annual mortgage payments rise by an average of £5,100 between now and the end of 2024 - with £1,200 of that reflecting higher expectations of interest rate rises since the ‘mini-budget' – according to new analysis published today (Saturday) by the Resolution Foundation.   With the UK’s low-interest rate era firmly at an end – the Bank of England is on course to have raised its policy interest rate from just 0.25 per cent at the start of this year, to over 5 per cent by early next year.
