Philippines Eligible For Duty Free Access To Exported Goods To UK Through Dcts
The Philippines will be eligible for over 99% duty free access (by value) of total exported goods to the UK via the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS).   The UK is reshaping trade with developing countries through this new trading framework that will replace the UK Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) and will come into force in early 2023.

New PM Must Think The Unthinkable On Energy Bills Support, As Winter Catastrophe Threatens Families' Physical And Financial Health
The new Prime Minister will need to introduce radical new policy support - such as energy bill freezes and solidarity taxes.  Or unprecedented social tariffs costing tens of billions of pounds - to prevent the deepening energy bills crisis becoming a serious threat to families' physical and financial health this winter, according to a new Resolution Foundation report published today (Thursday 25 August 2022).

Highland's trauma-informed practice ambition takes step forward with two new appointments
Members of today's Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Committee have made two appointments to the newly-developed role of Trauma Champion.   Councillors Liz Kraft and Morven Reid were successfully appointed to the role and will represent the Council on both local and national Trauma Champion networks.

Champions For Older People And Children Appointed For The New Council Term
During its meeting which took place on Wednesday 24 August 2022, the Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Committee made six appointments to the roles of Children and Young People Champion and Champion for Older People.   Councillors Lyndsey Johnston, Pauline Munro and Chris Birt were nominated as Children and Young People Champions and have been appointed to the roles by the Committee.

Have Your Say Highland - Consultation Period Extended To Seek Views On The Delivery Of Area-based Funds
Earlier this month, The Highland Council launched a community engagement exercise to ask people's views on how they would like to see funding being prioritised in their local area.   The Council is responsible for the delivery of several external funding streams and as part of its commitment to localism, where possible, these funds are devolved to area committee level.

Students Told To Get Up To Date With Vaccinations Ahead Of Freshers' Week
Students should get up to date with 3 vaccines: Men ACWY (meningitis), MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and, for female students, HPV, before the start of the new term.   Students heading to university in September are being encouraged to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations ahead of Freshers' Week to protect themselves against a range of life-threatening illnesses.

Strike dates confirmed for Glasgow and East Renfrewshire schools as COSLA pay talks continue.   GMB Scotland has today (Tuesday 23 August) confirmed strike action for schools and early years services in Glasgow City Council and East Renfrewshire Council.

Government seeks views on reducing livestock methane production
Call for evidence launched to collect views on using animal feed products that can reduce methane emissions from livestock The UK Government has launched a UK-wide call for evidence asking agricultural industry, scientists and the wider public for information on the use of new types of animal feed products that can reduce methane emissions from livestock.   Ruminant livestock - cows and sheep - are the leading cause of farm greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

One week left to update post-16 Child Benefit claims
HMRC is reminding parents and carers of 16 to 19-year-olds that they have just one week left to confirm whether their teenager is staying in full-time education or approved training.   While young people are considering their future beyond their GCSE or Scottish National Certificate results, HMRC is asking parents and carers to make sure they update their Child Benefit records by 31 August, or risk seeing their payments end.

UK And Ukraine Launch Talks On Digital Trade Deal To Support Ukrainian Businesses
The UK and Ukraine have today [Wednesday 24 August 2022] announced their intention to pursue a new digital trade agreement to help Ukraine rebuild its economy and protect livelihoods.   New agreement will remove barriers to digital trade, providing much needed support for Ukrainian jobs and livelihoods following Russia's invasion.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon Hosts Energy Summit
The Scottish Government, energy companies and advice organisations met at Bute House today (Tuesday 23rd August) for a summit chaired by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.   During the meeting a consensus emerged around next steps that must be taken by the UK Government, and where further work and action will take place between energy companies, advice organisations and the Scottish Government ahead of a follow up meeting next month.
