Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant today quizzed the Scottish Government on how they are going to tackle off-market sales of Scottish land to "Green Lairds".   Yesterday (31 May 2022), at Topical Questions in the Scottish Parliament chamber, the MSP asked the Minister for Environment and Land Reform, Màiri McAllan on what steps the Scottish Government are taking to protect communities from off-market land sales by so called "Green Lairds".

Uk-us Tariff Resolution Creates Export Opportunities For Steelmakers And Whisky Makers Alike
From today, UK steel and aluminium exporters can get back to exporting to our largest trading partner.   Following the resolution of the S232 tariff dispute by the Secretary of State earlier this year, from today [Weds 1 June] UK steel and aluminium exporters can start exporting tariff free up to a specified volume to our largest trading partner for the first time since 2018.

Scottish Economy Grows 1.0% In The First Quarter Of 2022
The Chief Statistician has released statistics showing that the economy grew by 1.0% during the first quarter of 2022, covering the period January to March.   Monthly statistics also released today show that GDP is estimated to have grown by 0.3% in March, with increases across the services and construction sectors.

NHS Highland regrets to announce that due to ongoing unprecedented staffing pressures we have had to suspend service delivery at the Urgent Care Centre in Portree.   We will operate a see and treat model of care from the new Broadford Hospital while service improvements are made in north Skye.

Overnight short stay parking by motorhome users is being piloted in twelve designated regulated Highland Council car parks for the summer/autumn season 2022.  Designated car parks in Inverness, Nairn, Caithness, Wick, Sutherland and Wester Ross are included in the trial scheme which aims to charge users for a self-contained overnight stay in their vehicle in allocated parking bays.

Clarification Needed As Off Grid Homes Face Soaring Heating Costs - Heating Oil Prices Have Soared but No Government Help
Scots in ‘off grid' properties are the ‘forgotten victims' of the cost of living crisis, claim Scottish Labour.   Following the release of consumer price index statistics from the Office of National Statistics, Scottish Labour have identified that in just a year, the cost of heating oil has increased over £500 per 1000 litre.

Highland Council is reminding members of the public and businesses that a ban on single use plastics comes into effect on 1 June 2022.   Scotland will be the first UK nation to pursue a ban on single-use plastics, which represent some of the world's most environmentally damaging items.
