Snp Opposition Leader Fails To Back The Highlands
2nd June 2017
In extraordinary scenes during yesterday's Highland Council meeting, Leader of the Opposition Councillor Maxine Smith, attempted to block the council from having a higher profile at a national level. Along with her SNP colleagues she refused to back a suggestion to nominate Council Leader, Margaret Davidson, as a Vice President of COSLA. This powerful body represents local authorities across Scotland, giving them direct access to Government ministers and the ability to influence decisions affecting local communities.
Following the meeting, Convener Bill Lobban commented, "It seems that Councillor Smith's post-election sulk continues. This is the latest example of her opting to play petty political games rather than offering the constructive opposition she promised. By attempting to obstruct this nomination she made it clear that she didn't want Highland Council to have a greater say about the decisions that affect us. She's failed to back the Highlands by trying to silence it."
Despite this, councillors voted overwhelmingly to propose Councillor Davidson as their nominee. Responding Margaret Davidson said, "We have a fantastic opportunity to raise our area’s profile. I’ve heard the Highlands described as a "sleeping giant" by other council leaders across Scotland. The previous SNP administration was mute on many issues, not wanting to upset their masters at Holyrood. That is going to end. I want to make sure we are wide awake, that we are heard at every opportunity and get the best deal for the Highlands."
