With the EU referendum fast approaching, The Highland Council is urging residents to make sure they are registered to vote by the 7 June deadline, and to check the Electoral Commission's voting guide for advice on how to take part.
The referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union will take place on Thursday 23 June 2016.
The voting guide, which was recently delivered to every household in Scotland contains important information for voters on how to register to vote, how to cast your vote, and arguments from the lead campaigners for the ‘Remain’ and ‘Leave’ side.
Bill Gillies, Electoral Registration Officer for Highland and Western Isles said:"Now that voters in The Highland Council Area have received the voting guide from the Electoral Commission, we hope people feel confident about taking part in the referendum on 23 June. "Don’t forget that you won’t be able to have a say if you aren’t registered to vote by the 7 June deadline, so I’d encourage anyone not already registered to do it online now at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote."
Voters that are already registered to vote are being reminded that they do not need to register again for the EU Referendum on 23 June. Anyone already registered and eligible to vote will have received a poll card by 25 May 2016.
Andy O’Neill, Head of the Electoral Commission in Scotland said:“The referendum on 23 June is an opportunity for people to have their say on one of the key political issues of our time.
“Voters have told us that they want accessible and impartial information so that they feel they can make an informed decision at the ballot box. We have sent our voting guide to every household across the UK so that as many people as possible feel confident about casting their vote on 23 June."
The guide is also available online and has been produced in a range of different languages and accessible formats.

Highland Workforce Housing Survey
The Highland Council are calling on all businesses to take part in a wide-scale survey about housing shortage and its impact on the Highland economy. The survey is a part of the Highland Housing Challenge Action Plan agreed by the Council in 2024, to tackle the impact of housing shortage on Highland communities, as well as meeting future demand for housing as a result of opportunities to grow the Highland economy.
