Good progress reported as Highland Council meets 89% of Programme commitments
The latest Corporate performance report shows that the Council is meeting 89% of its Programme commitments with 64 out of 72 being either completed, on target or maintaining performance.   Council Leader Margaret Davidson said, "This is an excellent report and I would like to thank staff across the Council who have contributed to this outstanding performance.

Additional £500 million for education
Legislation that will reform council tax and raise additional, targeted funding to improve Scotland's schools has been set out in Parliament today.   Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Derek Mackay, confirmed that the necessary legal instruments had been laid at Holyrood, paving the way for reforms due to take effect from April 2017.

Festive Period dates for on-sales extended hours
The Highland Licensing Board has agreed upon dates over the festive period 2016/17 between which extended on-sales hours may be permitted so the Council is advising licence holders wishing to apply to do so before the deadline of 1 December.   The extended on-sale hours, if approved, can be up to 4am for late opening premises and up to 2am for other on-sales premises in accordance with the Board's Licensing Policy Statement.

Nine candidates contest Inverness Ward by-election
Nine candidates are to contest the upcoming by-election to elect a councillor to represent the Culloden and Ardersier Ward of The Highland Council.   The candidates are: • Andrew JARVIE - Scottish Conservative and Unionist • Thomas LAMONT - Independent • Andrew James MACKINTOSH - Scottish Labour Party • Isla MACLEOD-O'REILLY - Scottish Greens • Duncan MACPHERSON - Independent • David MCGRATH - Independent • Pauline MUNRO - Scottish National Party (SNP) • Trish ROBERTSON - Scottish Liberal Democrats • John ROSS - Independent The by-election is being held after John Ford, one of four Councillors for Ward 18, sadly died.

New study suggests women do ask for pay rises but don't get them
New research from the Cass Business School, the University of Warwick and the University of Wisconsin shows that women ask for wage rises just as often as men, but men are 25 per cent more likely to get a raise when they ask.   Using a randomly chosen sample of 4,600 workers across more than 800 employers, the research is the first to do a statistical test of the idea that women get paid less because they are not as pushy as men.

UNISON further education members on strike from Stornoway to Stranraer
UNISON's further education (FE) members across Scotland will go on strike tomorrow for fair pay.  As at close of business Monday, September 5, the Scottish further education employers have failed to offer any acceptable way forward in the pay dispute involving some 2,300 UNISON support workers across 20 FE colleges.

An off the shelf CCTV camera is providing crystal clear images from the depths of Dounreay's Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR).   Fifty years on from the construction of PFR, the reactor decommissioning team is viewing footage that will enable it to pull apart the innards of the second and last fast reactor to be built in the UK.

The last of the higher activity liquid waste produced during Dounreay Fast Reactor (DFR) fuel reprocessing has been made safe for future generations.  It is an important milestone in the immobilisation of the historic liquid waste, known as raffinate, created from reprocessing undertaken during the operation of Dounreay's three reactors.

The Highland Council is warning the public of the presence of an algal bloom at Loch Watten, Caithness.   As a precautionary measure, environmental health have posted notices next to the water body, warning that contact with the algal scum or mat material should be avoided.

4TH GENERATION TERM CONTRACT FOR MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SCOTTISH TRUNK ROAD NETWORK - NORTH WEST UNIT A9 NORTH OF KESSOCK SOUTHBOUND - OVERNIGHT RESURFACING BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be carrying out essential resurfacing works on a section of the southbound A9 Trunk Road between Tore and Inverness.  The resurfacing works are programmed for construction between Sunday 18th and Thursday 22nd September 2016.

More bad news for the NHS in the Highlands
NHS Highland is facing £103 million in projected cuts in the next five years.   Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, released the figure today, following a week of revelations by Scottish Labour about the state of the health service in Scotland.

At a meeting on 31st August 2016 meeting of the Caithness Committee councillors had the chance to discuss the work underway to create a new community partnership in the area to support local planning arrangements.   The Highland Community Planning Partnership Board agreed at their meeting on 30th June to establish 9 local partnerships across the Highlands, one of which will cover Caithness.

Calum Maclennan (18) from Alness took up the role of Highland Youth Convener this week and started the job by saying he was looking forward to spending the next 12 months working with the Highland Youth Parliament, Area Youth Forum and Pupil Councils in secondary schools across the Highlands.   As the tenth Youth Convener, Calum will be based at High Life Highland's Head Offices in Inverness fulfilling the bursary position until August 2017.
