UK Takes Major Step Towards Joining Indo-pacific Trade Bloc
The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership Act receives Royal Assent.   UK poised to join Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) trade group later this year as the Trade (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) Act receives Royal Assent Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch signed the accession treaty for Indo-Pacific bloc last July following two years of negotiations With the UK as a member CPTPP will account for 15% of global GDP - worth £12 trillion in 2022 The UK is today [20 March] one step closer to joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) later this year, as the new Trade (CPTPP) Act received Royal Assent.

Fastest Inflation Fall In Nearly Half A Century Suggests Uk Is On Track To Hit Two Per Cent Target By April
CPI inflation fell to 3.4 per cent in February, confirming the fastest 12-month fall in inflation since 1978 and bringing inflation to its lowest level since September 2021, the Resolution Foundation said.   This latest fall takes UK inflation within touching distance of US CPI inflation (3.2 per cent), although remains above the euro area (2.6 per cent), having experienced far higher inflation in recent months.

Poverty Levels\ In Scotland Broadly Stable
Covering the period until March 2023, the latest statistics show little recent change in poverty levels for children and pensioners.  Poverty for working-age adults is slightly higher than in recent years, which could be driven by people becoming economically inactive as a result of the pandemic.

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) sets monetary policy to meet the 2% inflation target, and in a way that helps to sustain growth and employment.  At its meeting ending on 20 March 2024, the MPC voted by a majority of 8-1 to maintain Bank Rate at 5.25%.

The proposals, which are subject to parliamentary approval, will include the following: a standard online application made from within the UK will rise to £88.50 for adults and £57.50 for children a standard postal application will increase to £100.00 for adults and £69.00 for children a standard online application when applying from overseas will rise to £101.00 for adults and £65.50 for children a standard paper application when applying from overseas will increase to £112.50 for adults and £77.00 for children The new fees will help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation.  The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.

Farm Income In Scotland At Record High In 2022-23
The Chief Statistician has released figures on 2022-23 farm incomes.  These show that average income increased to its highest level since 2012-13, after adjusting for inflation.
