Easement ends for employee home-office expenses
Existing rules prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic provided Income Tax and National Insurance contributions exemptions, where employers provide employees with equipment to allow them to work from home.  This rule remains in place.

VAT Reverse Charge For Construction And Building Services
VAT-registered construction businesses should note that this reverse charge came in on 1 March 2021.  Revenue and Customs Brief 7 (2020) contains more information.  In January 2021, a letter was sent to every VAT-registered construction business.

HMRC Changes To Extended Loss Carry Back - 1 April 2020 And 31 March 2022 Extended By A Further Two Years

Boris Johnson Fined By Police Over Partygate - What Happens Next?
After months of dodging the issue, it appears that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson did in fact break his own emergency laws during COVID restrictions.   The police have fined Johnson, his wife Carrie and - in a new twist to the story - Chancellor Rishi Sunak in relation to the partygate affair, which saw staff socialising in government buildings while the rest of the country was living under severe restrictions on their movements.

Making Tax Digital For VAT Is Coming To All VAT-registered Businesses
From April 2022, all VAT-registered businesses, regardless of taxable turnover, will be required to follow Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules.   This means using MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and submitting VAT returns through Making Tax Digital for VAT.

The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 6.2% in the 12 months to March 2022, up from 5.5% in February.   The largest upward contributions to the annual CPIH inflation rate in March 2022 came from housing and household services (1.49 percentage points, principally from electricity, gas and other fuels, and owner occupiers' housing costs) and transport (1.47 percentage points, principally from motor fuels and second-hand cars).

The Office for National Statistics report shows the increase in payrolled employees.   Main points Early estimates for March 2022 indicate that the number of payrolled employees rose by 4.9% compared with March 2021, a rise of 1,376,000 employees; the number of payrolled employees was up by 1.9% since February 2020, a rise of 544,000.

The Office for National Statistics report released today show a huge rising housing services costs.   Figure 4 shows the contribution of owner occupiers' housing costs (OOH) and Council Tax to the Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) 12-month inflation rate in the context of wider housing-related costs.

PM Statement: 12 April 2022 - Fined for Breaking Covid Rules
Today I have received a fixed penalty notice from the Metropolitan Police relating to an event in Downing Street on 19th June 2020, and let me say immediately that I have paid the fine and I once again offer a full apology.   And in a spirit of openness and humility, I want to be completely clear about what happened on that date.
