Highland Council Distance Learning Course to Become a Primary School Teacher

Part-time distance learning primary teaching course.

Building on an existing successful partnership between The Highland Council and the University of Aberdeen, the next Distance Learning Initial Teacher Education Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (DLITE PGDE) (Primary) begins on 7 February 2015. Ten places are available.

The DLITE PGDE (Primary) is a part-time, distance learning, 18 month programme of study (120 credits), which includes 18 weeks of placement experience in Primary Schools within the Highland Council area. The course makes use of blended learning opportunities: E-Learning, face-to-face workshops (six Saturday ‘Network' days), self-study, collaborative group work, and professional practice on placement (18 weeks in total), to develop the academic, personal, and professional skills suitable for entry into the teaching profession.

The programme involves set courses which include:
· Developing Professional Practice 1 & 2: Professional Studies / Learning & Teaching Through the Primary Curriculum / Professional Enquiry.

· School Experience: 18 weeks of full-time placement over the duration of the programme


Applications are invited from appropriately qualified individuals living in the Highland Council area. Entry requirements for the course are as follows:

· Graduate with relevant experience in working with young people (formally or informally);

· Higher English at Grade C or above or equivalent;

· Mathematics National 5 at Grade C or above, Standard Grade at Grade 2 or above,

Intermediate 2 at Grade C or above, or equivalent;
· Competent ICT skills appropriate for engaging in online distance learning.

The deadline for applications is 9 January 2015. Interviews will be held in Inverness on Friday 23 January 2015. The course starts with an induction which will be held in the University of Aberdeen on Saturday 7 February 2015.

Members agree Highland Council's new Community Wealth Building Strategy
Members at today's (14 March 2024) meeting of The Highland Council agreed the local authority's new draft Community Wealth Building Strategy.   They were also asked to note that a period of public engagement on the draft will now begin, with a final strategy returning to full Council for consideration in September.
