Cooling Labour Market Means Next Government Will Have To Tackle The Problem Of Falling Employment, Not Falling Inflation
The UK labour market continues to cool, with the employment rate only just above its mid-pandemic low point, suggesting that kickstarting jobs growth will be a major task for the next government, the Resolution Foundation said in response to the latest ONS labour market statistics.   The latest data showed widespread signs of cooling, although data uncertainty make some indicators noisier than usual.

The estimated number of vacancies in March to May 2024 was 904,000, a decrease of 12,000 or 1.3% from December 2023 to February 2024.   Vacancy numbers decreased on the quarter for the 23rd consecutive period in March to May 2024, with vacancies decreasing in 9 of the 18 industry sectors.

Labour Market Overview, Uk - June 2024
This month's figures continue to show signs that the labour market may be cooling, with the number of vacancies still falling and unemployment rising, though earnings growth remains relatively strong.   Short-term movements varied across our different measures of employment.

Index Of Production UK - April 2024
Monthly production output was estimated to have fallen by 0.9% in April 2024; this follows a rise of 0.2% in March 2024 and 1.0% in February 2024.   The monthly decrease in output for April 2024 resulted from a fall of 1.4% in "manufacturing"; this was partially offset by rises in "water supply and sewerage" (1.3%), "mining and quarrying" (0.8%) and "electricity and gas" (0.5%).

The value of goods imports increased by £3.7 billion (8.2%) in April 2024, because of increases in imports of machinery and transport equipment and fuels.   The value of goods exports remained stable in April 2024, with a fall in exports to the EU offset by a rise in exports to non-EU countries.

Early estimates for May 2024 indicate that the number of payrolled employees rose by 0.6% compared with May 2023, a rise of 167,000 employees.   This annual increase was largest in the health and social work sector, a rise of 155,000 employees.

Monthly real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have shown no growth in April 2024, following growth of 0.4% in March 2024.   Real gross domestic product is estimated to have grown by 0.7% in the three months to April 2024 compared with the three months to January 2024.

Construction Output In Great Britain - April 2024
Monthly construction output is estimated to have decreased by 1.4% in volume terms in April 2024, with the monthly value in level terms at £14,940 million.   The fall in monthly output came from decreases in both new work (1.9% fall), and repair and maintenance (0.8% fall); anecdotal evidence from survey returns suggests effects of heavy rainfall and strong winds affected output in April.

Labour Market In The Regions Of The UK - June 2024 - Scotland Has Largest Increase Of 168,000
Labour Force Survey (LFS) estimates have been reweighted for periods from July to September 2022; headline UK seasonally adjusted series before this have been modelled, but other series, including regional, have a discontinuity at this point, and because of increased volatility of LFS estimates, estimates of quarterly change should be treated with additional caution.   In February to April 2024, the highest employment rate in the UK was in the South East (78.3%) and the lowest was in Wales (68.9%).

100,000 British Citizens Based Overseas For More Than 15 Years Have Registered To Vote In The Uk Election
Many of the overseas people who have registered to vote may ot pay tax here.   The conservatives brought in new rules to allow them to vote.

Scotland's Labour Market Trends - Payrolled Employees Slight Increase
Early seasonally adjusted estimates for May 2024 from HMRC Pay As You Earn Real Time Information indicate that there were 2.46 million payrolled employees in Scotland, a rise of 0.5 per cent (12,000) compared with May 2023.  This compares with the UK where the number of payrolled employees rose by 0.6 per cent over the same period.
