Options for the Corran Ferry service to be further developed
The Community Services Committee today considered the implications of a report on the cost of running the Corran Ferry, which, despite fare increases, continues to run at a deficit.   Under European State Aid tests, there is a real possibility that the public funding of the Corran Ferry service deficit may be viewed as State Aid.

Council seeks public opinion on development planning in Caithness and Sutherland
A major public consultation is now underway to help prepare a new 20 year Local Development Plan for the Caithness and Sutherland area, to be known as CaSPlan.   The Main Issues Report was published on 30 October 2014 and it is the first formal stage of preparing the new CaSPlan.

New survey reveals 93% of Highland residents are happy with community life and services in the Highlands
A report on the latest results from a survey of the Citizen's Panel shows generally positive trends and improving satisfaction with most services in the Highlands.   93% say they rate quality of community life in the neighbourhood they live in as very or fairly good and almost 97% rate their locality as very or fairly safe.

MSP backs Highland Councillors' call for second ETV
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, has backed the call by Highland Councillors to have a second Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) reinstated to cover north and west coast waters.   The call comes on the back of the recent incident whereby a boat carrying nuclear waste through north waters caught fire and was left drifting in the north sea, resulting in the Beatrice oil platform being evacuated as a precaution.

UK Business Confidence Cools
The US GDP estimate for the third quarter of 2014 showed that the economy grew 3.5% on an annualised quarter-on-quarter basis.  The figure was above consensus expectations of 3.0% and suggests a continued economic recovery, putting the US on track for 2.2% growth over 2014.

Manufacturers are crying out for young talent: 66% plan to recruit an engineering graduate in the next three years and 66% plan to recruit an engineering apprentice in the next 12 months.   Opportunity to earn: the average engineering apprentice earns £7.03 per hour just to train, while the average engineering graduate earns a fifth more than other graduates.

Week Commencing 27th October 2014 Energy & Business services: Following much recent work by HIE's local team, especially Roy Kirk and CNSRP partner secondees June Love (from DSRL) and Lindsay Foord (from Highland Council), this week saw a visit by oil & gas companies to Caithness.  It was good to see more than twenty representatives from a range of companies, who were greeted by Cllr Gail Ross, Highland Council's Civic Leader for Caithness.
