Easing Pressure On Temporary Accommodation
Councils will receive a share of an additional £40m this year to increase the supply of social and affordable homes.   The funding, which was confirmed in April and has boosted the affordable housing supply programme budget to nearly £600m this year, will mostly be distributed to the five council areas with sustained temporary accommodation pressures: Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian.

Real Wage Growth Gave Workers A Welcome Income Boost This Summer, And Pensioners Will Get One Next Spring
Pay growth is weakening as the labour market continues to cool.   But falling inflation means that workers still received a welcome real-terms income boost this summer, while pensioners will get one next spring too, as today's earnings data is set to drive a £460 a year increase in the full rate of the new State Pension via the Triple Lock, the Resolution Foundation said on Tuesday 10 September 2024.

Index Of Production UK - July 2024
Monthly production output was estimated to have decreased by 0.8% in July 2024; this follows a 0.8% increase in June 2024.   The monthly output decrease in July 2024 resulted primarily from a decrease of 1.0% in "manufacturing", supported by smaller contributing decreases in "electricity and gas" (down 1.7%) and "water supply and sewerage" (down 0.7%); these rises were partially offset by a rise in “mining and quarrying” (3.9%).

Scottish School Estates Statistics 2024 Show Significant Improvement
The proportion of schools reported as being in good or satisfactory condition has increased to 91.7% (90.9% in 2023).  This is 29 percentage points higher than in April 2007 (62.7%).

Monthly real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have shown no growth in July 2024, after also showing no growth in June 2024.   Real GDP is estimated to have grown by 0.5% in the three months to July 2024 compared with the three months to April 2024, with widespread growths in the services sector in this period.

Construction Output In Great Britain - July 2024
Monthly construction output is estimated to have decreased 0.4% in volume terms in July 2024; this follows an increase of 0.5% in June 2024.   The decrease in monthly output came from falls in both new work (0.2%) and repair and maintenance (0.7%).

The value of goods imports decreased by £1.5 billion (3.0%) in July 2024, with a fall in imports from both EU and non-EU countries.   The value of goods exports fell by £3.4 billion (10.8%) in July 2024, with exports to both EU and non-EU countries decreasing, following a large rise the previous month.

Reforms to Inheritance Tax (IHT), Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and employer National Insurance (NI) could raise over £20 billion a year, and still pass a 'Triple tax test' of improving tax efficiency.  This ensures that tax rises fall on those with the broadest shoulders and not break manifesto commitments, according to new Resolution Foundation research published today Tuesday 10 September 2024.
