Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership - Update
Week Commencing 13th May 2013 Energy/ Business Services: I met this week with colleagues from HIE, Highland Council, Environmental Research Institute, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd and business representatives to discuss the evolving concept of an “International Marine Energy Delivery (IMED)” campus in Caithness. It was clear from the meeting that there is a considerable amount of work currently being undertaken in the north that is ready for wider international attention, including the academic work being taken forward by the ERI and European partners, and the international work being undertaken by area businesses.10/5/2013

Week Commencing 6 May 2013 Energy/ Business Services: Ignis Wick Ltd, the company behind the combined heat and power scheme in Wick, have announced a further expansion of the district heating system with the connection later this month of the Wick Assembly Rooms. This will allow the north’s largest public performance venue to be heated entirely from renewable energy, enabling its oil-fired boiler to be switched off.9/5/2013

Police issue warning to disqualified drivers. The Highland and Islands Division continue to receive information and intelligence about drivers who drive illegally when they have been disqualified or do not hold an appropriate licence.2/5/2013

Energy/ Business Services: As we continue to see positive interest in Caithness from the energy sector, I met this week with representatives from Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd, HIE and Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd to discuss feedback from recent contact and to agree the key messages we will continue to take to companies in the sector about the value of doing business in the north. Enabling Activities: Continuing work on developing our activities in support of skills this week: I met with local partners to discuss how we might best help people to understand and take advantage of some forthcoming opportunities in the “home-working” sector, where doing a range of skilled work from a home base can be an attractive option.28/4/2013
Police Aks For Information Regarding Forced Entry
Police are appealing for information following reports of entry forced to an out building in the Caithness area. The incident took place in Spittal between 20:30 hours on Saturday 27th April 2013 and 19:00 hours on Sunday 28ths April 2013.26/4/2013

Week commencing 22 April 2013 Energy/ Business Services: Scrabster Harbour Trust has this week announced an agreement with NorSea Group, a major Norwegian oil & gas services company, that is expected will lead to major investment and new job prospects for the local economy. NorSea operates nine supply bases along the coast of Norway, but this will be its first Scottish base.26/4/2013
POLICE appeal for information in their operation to target rural thefts across Highland area
POLICE are appealing for information from the public to assist them target those responsbile for rural thefts across the Highland area as part of OPERATION ENGAGE. Within the last few weeks, Police have noted an increase in the number of thefts in the more rural areas of the Highlands.24/4/2013
Camera Inside Dounreay Reactor After Fifty Years
A camera has delved into the depths of Dounreay’s famous dome and captured the first footage for over fifty years of Britain’s first Fast Breeder Reactor. Nitrogen cooled digital cameras have been inserted into the reactor and recorded the images of the internal structures and the breeder fuel matrix.

The Partnership’s Executive and Advisory Boards have identified this as a priority issue, and from recent discussions with potential investors, particularly in the energy sector, better intelligence on industry requirements is emerging to help us.16/4/2013

POLICE have recovered Class A drugs with a street value of £30,000 in the Inverness area. Following on from the work of officers from the Organised Crime and Counter Terrorist Unit Specialist Crime Division and Highland and Islands Division, Police Scotland have secured a significant success in their war against drugs yesterday, in Inverness.14/4/2013

Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division take part in week of action on the roads in the area as part of a national enforcement campaign to deter and detect speeding and inappropriate drivers. The campaign, which started today at 07:00 hours, is the first under Police Scotland as part of the commitment to making Scotland's road safer.

Week Commencing 8th April 2013 Energy/ Business Services: Students from North Highland College’s Engineering apprenticeship programme have just returned from a week in Orkney studying Marine Renewables Safety Training at Orkney College’s Maritime Studies department. The students (including some from Orkney) are based at Thurso’s state-of-the-art Engineering, Technology & Energy Centre (ETEC), but this tie-up allows students to add crucial maritime safety elements to their final qualification, bringing them closer to opportunities in the energy sector.9/4/2013
Closure of Sheriff Courts a mistake claims Highlands & Islands MSP
Highlands & Islands Labour MSP David Stewart has hit out at plans revealed by the Scottish Court service which indicate that there are plans to close 10 of Scotland’s Sheriff Courts and seven JP Courts. David Stewart said “It appears that the Government plan to make savings by closing 10 Sheriff Courts across the country.

Caithness Chamber funds retraining for subsea sector at The Underwater Centre
The first graduate to come through The Underwater Centre’s Fort William-based subsea training facility as a result of a Caithness Chamber of Commerce-led funding initiative has already secured a job in the industry. Kevin Macleod (30), of Caithness, who was working as an instrument technician with Johnson Controls at Dounreay until recently, has been taken on as an apprentice ROV pilot technician with Fugro, one of the world’s largest ROV operators.29/3/2013
NDA publishes 2013-16 Business Plan
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has this week published its 2013-16 Business Plan which sets out its delivery priorities for the period as it continues to focus on accelerating hazard reduction across its 19-site estate. The focus at Sellafield will remain on driving forward further progress across the site including a programme of major projects required to decommission the high hazard legacy ponds and silos, while also working towards the completion of the contracts at both the Magnox and Thorp reprocessing plants by the end of the decade.
