Police in Highland and Islands Division reiterate road safety messages following week of action on roads.
Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division reiterate road safety messages following a week long national enforcement campaign to deter and detect speeding and inappropriate driving on the areas roads.
Offences such as careless or dangerous driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, using a mobile phone or hand held device whilst driving and driving without insurance or a driving licence were targeted during the initiative.
The campaign, which ran from Monday 15 to Friday 19 April 2013, saw more than 60 drivers reported for speeding offences and seven reported for dangerous or careless driving.
Divisional Road Policing Unit Inspector Neil Lumsden said: "It is disheartening to see that whilst we have informed the public of the campaign that some motorists are still choosing to drive over the speed limit and in a careless or dangerous manner. Although they could be perceived as being relatively low numbers, I would like to reinforce the message that one person committing such an offence, is one too many.”
In addition to speeding and dangerous or careless driving offences, 30 were detected not wearing seatbelts and 19 for using mobile phones. Inspector Lumsden continued: "There is no excuse for committing distraction offences or not adhering to simple safety measures, such as wearing seatbelts. Quite simply, losing concentration for just a second and not being secured within a vehicle can cost yours and others lives.”

UNISON, the union for police staff, says Scotland's police budget cut will see even more crime going unreported and crimes not being fully investigated. Gross misconduct proceedings against police officers should be allowed to continue after they resign from the force to promote transparency and maintain public confidence, according to a public consultation. The move, which would see proceedings continue even if an officer leaves during the course of an investigation into their conduct, was among the recommendations of Dame Elish Angiolini's independent review into how police complaints and allegations of misconduct should be handled.
The total number of people proceeded against in Scottish courts fell by 46% to 46,497 in the year to 2020-21, according to National Statistics published by Scotland's Chief Statistician today. The number of people convicted fell at a similar rate, down 44% to 42,532.
Cllr Matthew Reiss, Highland Council's Strategic Lead for Police and Fire has welcomed Police Scotland's announcement that it has created fifteen new posts to further enhance the development of call handling services, based in Inverness. He said: "We were delighted in October last year to welcome 25 new jobs in Inverness with the creation of a specialist call handling service team and these fifteen additional new posts based in the Highlands are great news.
Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf has responded to the Lord President's decision to reduce the number of criminal trials as part of efforts to reduce the transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19). A report on 17 December 2019 from the Auditor General highlights some progress over the last year amid a raft of new appointments to Police Scotland, including a new chief constable and three deputies, and seven new members to the SPA Board.
