Weekly National Flu And Covid-19 Surveillance Reports For England Published
National influenza and COVID-19 report, monitoring coronavirus (COVID-19) activity, seasonal flu and other seasonal respiratory illnesses.   The main points from the weekly national influenza and COVID-19 surveillance report for week 44 (data up to week 43) are: COVID-19 Case rates increased in every age group except for those aged 10 to 19, which saw a small decrease.

Short Term Lets To Require Licences - Fee Charges For Landlords To Be Decided Later
Members at yesterday's meeting of Highland Council homologated its response to the Scottish Government's consultation on the proposals for the regulation of short-term lets in Scotland.   The response was submitted by the 16 October deadline following consultation with the chairs of the Tourism and Licensing committees.

Highland Council Appoints Chief Executive Officer Health and Social Care
Fiona Duncan has been appointed by The Highland Council as Executive Chief Officer for Health and Social Care, taking over from Fiona Malcolm who has been undertaking the Interim ECO role since early September.  Ms Duncan is due to take up the position in January 2021.

Following a motion put forward by the Caithness Committee, today Highland Councillors have given their commitment to continue to work to secure the sustainability of Wick John O'Groats Airport and to press for Public Service Obligation (PSO) status as a matter of urgency.   Wick has had commercial services from its airport since the 1970s, with services connecting to Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Updated Schools Guidance For Covid Brings More Rules
Guidance on school safety has been updated to take account of public health advice and Scotland's new approach to suppressing coronavirus (COVID-19).   The guidance, which outlines additional protection measures at all five levels in the Strategic Framework, comes into force on Monday 2 November.

Covid Cases In Highland Passes 900
Similar to the rest of Scotland, and indeed the UK, the number of COVID cases in Highland, Argyll and Bute are increasing.   With the number of COVID cases across the whole of NHS Highland having now passed 900 since the start of the pandemic NHS Highland is reminding everyone on the importance of self-isolating for those who have confirmed COVID and those who are identified as close contacts.

Two Highland schools nominated for Phase 2 of Learning Estate Improvement Programme
At today's meeting of the Highland Council, elected members were updated on the Learning Estate Improvement Programme (LEIP), which is the Scottish Government's new funding model for school investment projects.   This update follows on from a special meeting of Highland Council on 1 October 2020, during which elected members agreed that Broadford Primary School should be nominated as the Council’s priority for consideration by the Scottish Government for inclusion in Phase 2 of the LEIP.
