Twenty-second year and still new things to discover and enjoy about highland past 
The twenty-second Highland Archaeology Festival gets underway at the end of this week (Friday 2nd October) with another packed programme of events across the Highlands. The fortnight-long Festival, which is co-ordinated by The Highland Council's Development and Infrastructure Service in partnership with dozens of local event organiser across the Highland Council area and in Moray, runs from Friday 2nd October to Sunday 18th October.

Highland Council continues to consult on budget savings
Significant energy is being spent on work to plan ahead and identify savings to address the anticipated budget gap. The Council meeting in June 2015 considered a report which estimated a forecast budget deficit for the next three financial years of £46.28 million.29/9/2015
Breakthrough Achievement in supporting the recruitment of retained firefighters
Community Planning Partners (CPP) in Highland have agreed unanimously to support the recruitment of retained firefighters. Chair of the CPP Board and Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Margaret Davidson said: "Resilient communities are dependent on having trained fire fighters available and accessible.28/9/2015
Views sought on Highland Planning Policies through new consultation portal
Consultations commence on a review of the Highland-Wide Local Development Plan, Onshore Wind Energy Guidance and the Local Housing Strategy. The Highland Council has today launched three online consultations on planning and housing issues across the area, including a review of its main planning policy document the Highland-wide Local Development Plan.28/9/2015
Council Committee to discuss community transport grants
Details of a process for a call for community transport grants applications will be considered by The Highland Council's Community Services Committee at their meeting on 5th November 2015. Twenty-two third sector organisations are currently grant funded through transport services and have been advised that their grants expire on 31st March 2016.26/9/2015

Week Commencing 21st September 2015 Energy & Business Services It is good to note this week's coverage in the local press of the arrival of the cable-laying vessel "Siem Daya 1" in the Pentland Firth as part of Atlantis Resources Ltd's MeyGen tidal project. Following the successful completion of directional drilling for the cables that will take power from the four Phase 1A devices to the onshore Power Conversion Unit at Ness of Quoys, the laying of the cables this week marks a further milestone for the project.26/9/2015

Lord Lieutenant salutes Dounreay on 60 years of apprentices
The latest batch of Dounreay's newly qualified skilled workers were encouraged to make the most of the exciting opportunities and challenges ahead. This year Dounreay's new recruits are the sixtieth group of apprentices in a long line of young people joining the site's highly respected apprenticeship scheme since 1955.

Teacher recruitment - Education Secretary announces campaign to attract more teachers
The Scottish Government will launch a campaign to encourage more teachers to enter the profession, the Education Secretary announced at the Scottish Learning Festival in Glasgow today. The recruitment campaign will particularly focus on attracting teachers to STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and maths.23/9/2015
Survey on changes to X99 service - Inverness to Thurso
Following discussions at recent meetings of the Caithness Transport Forum and Caithness Bus Users Group on Stagecoach's proposed changes to the X99 Inverness-Thurso service, Caithness Chamber of Commerce has launched a short survey asking local bus users to note whether they would prefer that the 16:40 or the 17:40 northbound journey be retained, and seeking further information on usage of the service (e.g. for leisure, hospital appointments, etc.) The survey is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NXZKSBW , and will run until 5pm on Wednesday 30th September 2015.

European Social Fund (ESF) programme allocation
