Double success for RWE NUKEM

10th May 2005

RWE NUKEM has had a double success in safety and environmental performance. For the eighth consecutive year, the Company has achieved one of the UK's most respected safety awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) – the Gold Medal for best practice in health and safety. Winning the RoSPA Gold Medal once again demonstrates that RWE NUKEM has maintained consistently high standards of health and safety management across all of its sites and in all of its projects.

In addition to this RWE NUKEM has also been awarded the environmental certification of ISO 14001 from LRQA. This is a significant achievement for the Company. Preparation for the audit took place throughout 2004 and the award in early 2005 demonstrates that RWE NUKEM is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and protecting it from harm. It also demonstrates to all the Company's stakeholders that they have systems and processes in place to ensure they meet legal, commercial and community obligations towards protecting the environment.

On being asked about the double award RWE NUKEM's Managing Director, Dr Michael Down said "Both the RoSPA and ISO 14001 awards reflect an excellent team effort and Company recognition that we can only achieve our business ambitious goals if we maintain the highest levels of health and safety and environmental management at all our sites and on all our projects. But the awards are not just about the short term reduction in accidents at work or making sure we recycle paper. They are about ensuring that we have robust Safety, Health and Environmental management systems in place for the longer term. The awards reinforce the message that good Safety, Health and Environmental systems equal good business management."
