Michael Bissona expert on Driving and Wildlife Interactions for the
International Drivers Association has looked at the spider situation for drivers in the UK.

The UK might not be famous for its exotic wildlife, but there's no denying our fair share of critters that can make even the bravest of Brits jump. I'm talking about spiders. While our spiders are mostly harmless, they can create unexpected chaos, especially when you're behind the wheel.

We ran a poll, and did you know 67% of Brits are petrified of them?

As spider season is on the horizon, the International Drivers Association look into a more eyebrow-raising topics that have come up in recent years: the implication of spiders in cars and the potential repercussions it might have on your insurance and even your wallet.

UK's Spider Situation
Although our spiders are a far cry from their massive Australian cousins, the sight of an unexpected eight-legged passenger can be unnerving. As we go into late summer, we're bound to see more spiders than previous months.

The Real Risk: Careless Driving
It's not the spider that's the direct issue—it's the reaction it provokes. A jolt of surprise, a sudden swerve, or a frantic slap can divert a driver's attention. In the UK, if your reaction to a spider leads to erratic driving, you could be accused of driving without due care and attention or even dangerous driving- resulting in serious fines, or even a prison sentence.

The Sting in the Web: Insurance & Fines
Insurance Implications: If you have an accident because you were distracted by a spider, there's a chance your insurance company might view this as negligence. This could potentially void your claim. It's crucial to understand the terms of your policy.

Potential Fines: If you're deemed to have been driving carelessly due to being startled by a spider, you might be hit with a fine. In serious cases where there's a considerable risk to other road users, the fines can be hefty, and you could even get points on your license.

How to Spider-Proof Your Car
Routine Cleaning: Much like their Aussie counterparts, UK spiders are fond of quiet, dusty corners. Regularly cleaning your car's interior can help deter them. Let your mates know with the dirty car!

Inspect Before You Drive: Make it a habit to give your car, especially the visor and dashboard area, a quick check before setting off.

Ventilation: Keep your car's vents clear and consider using natural repellents like eucalyptus oil and lavender which is believed to deter spiders.

Michael Bissona, motoring expert at IDA says, "While the UK's spiders are mostly small and harmless, the implications of a surprise encounter while driving can be significant. Stay informed, be proactive, and ensure your insurance is up to date. The goal is simple: make every drive a safe (and spider-free) journey. Safe travels!
