"Dingwall Mart's annual Show and Sale of Cheviot Rams once again attracted a huge crowd from near and far as buyers from as far as Wales crossed the Castle drawbridge. Judging proceedings lay in the able hands of Mr. Melwyn Williams, who kindly accepted our invitation to judge. No stranger to Cheviot breeders, as a farmer and President of the North Country Sheep Society and runs his Pengroes flock in Wales. It was one of the best shows for quality and numbers at the pre-sale show in all the three classes. Champion was found in the two shear class, an absolute monster of a tup with serious body, power and class to match. An array of biding came from the Gantry, with Mr. S. Renwick, Inverboom the victor purchasing him for £4,00.
Reserve champion went to renowned hill breeder Hughie Mackenzie, with his Badanloch bred three shear ram. As a norm with sheep from this stable, a tup oozing class raced away at the bidding like a freight through the night. £6,500 was the outcome and he heads south to Lockerbie to run sheds at Gillespie Farm.
The top price of £6,500 was achieved on no fewer than three occasions with the other two coming from the Inkstack team of Red Robertson and Micheal Kirk and the noted Allanshaws Stable of Messrs Runciman. The first placed Inkstack shearling too headed south to Dumfries to Messrs Willbank, whilst the unshown shearling from Allanshaws sails west to Messrs Forrester Ardnacross.
A truly sensational trade raced the great Cheviot arena as no fewer than 141 tups grossed over £1,000 with copious amounts at £900. The whole sale levelled at an astonishing £780 per head with a 95% clearance rate and many a noted stable attempting to purchase shed sheep round off a near perfect days trading."
