There have been reports of a new email scam which appears to have been sent by Openreach. The message refers to a recent broadband upgrade and asks you to digitally sign an attached PDF to allow them to start work.
With more people looking to save money by switching broadband provider or changing their broadband/phone deal, this scam could appear very realistic, especially as it uses Openreach logos and branding.
In some cases, the scam email has been followed by a text message, which again asks you to sign the document recently sent to you and includes a phone number to call if you have any issues. The number provided in some of the messages is actually linked to a counterfeit clothing factory in Slovakia.
Openreach state on their website that will never ask you for personal information or bank details - either in person, over the phone or by email. They will also never ask to remotely access your computer, phone or tablet.
How to Avoid
Be wary of any unexpected email or text message that asks you to provide personal or financial information or to digitally sign a document.
Take some time to think before clicking on any links or providing any information - if in doubt, contact the company that appears to have sent the message using details found in an official directory to verify the request.
If you're worried that you have given a scammer your bank details, contact your bank immediately - they may be able to stop the money leaving your account. You should also report it to Police Scotland on 101.
