LearningWorks Gives Advice On Migrant Workers

The issues surrounding the employment of migrant workers are the subject of this month's Hot Topic on LearningWorks, the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) website dedicated to online training and learning.
LearningWorks explores the key issues employers should be aware of when employing migrant workers, with links to new information about work permits and the workers registration team. A list of frequently asked questions is provided, giving detailed information on the subjects of work permits, the workers registration scheme and the terms and condition which should apply to migrant workers.
The website also enables employers to post specific questions to an expert forum from the Scottish Executive Fresh Talent team.
In addition, migrant workers can use the website to access classes which will help improve their skills in the English language.
"The Highland and Islands have understandably been a big draw for many individuals seeking to live and work in Scotland," said Graham Young, LearningWorks manager at HIE. "LearningWorks provides access to all the information that is available on the subject, making it easier to keep abreast of the issues which will affect those businesses in the Highlands and Islands who have chosen to address their skills shortages by employing migrant workers."

£3.4m HIE investment in Arnish Road, Stornoway
The project, led by the Stornoway Port Authority, will involve upgrading the full length of the 3.3km Arnish Moor Road. Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has approved a £3.4m contribution to a £7.2m public funding package for a major project to transform road access to strategic industrial and port sites on the Isle of Lewis.

As HIE reaches 60, new chair says best is yet to come
The newly appointed chair of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) says the region is on the threshold of a new era of economic growth. Angus Campbell's term as chair began officially on 1 November - 60 years to the day since HIE's forerunner, the Highlands and Islands Development Board (HIDB) opened for business with just six employees.
