Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD)

The Scottish Government is urging keepers of all breeding herds to think about their Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) testing before putting calves into the sales this autumn.

As part of the Scottish BVD eradication scheme all breeding herds must be screened for BVD by 1 February 2013. Testing youngstock is the most efficient method for most herds and keepers are being asked to consider which BVD testing method is best for their herd before it's too late.

Scotland's Chief Veterinary Officer Sheila Voas said:"Under the Scottish BVD eradication scheme, there's a wide range of testing methods designed to suit all herds. However, if you sell calves before having them tested you may severely limit your options. If you've not screened your herd yet and plan to sell calves this autumn, speak to your vet soon or check the guidance. Otherwise, you could end up having to test all your cattle instead of just a sample."
